I just upgraded my computer and when i got everything installed and drivers up ang going everything runs good except Oblivion. It was very laggy and my computer should be well enough to play the game, but i put it on the lowest setting and tried again and still laggy. i had nothing on my computer so I just reformatted and installed everything one at a time. well eventually i found out that as long as i dont have my sound drivers installed game runs fine. so i put in a sound card and even with the sound card in it still is laggy as hell. I'm just looking for ideas to try now i really want to play this game but its a no go so far. help me please.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT
    Motherboard: ASRock 775Dual-880Pro
    Ram: 1 gig DDR II
    Prossesser: Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 533MHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual Core,EM64T Processor

    Wow

You should be able to play this game on the higher setting with no lag whatsoever.I don't have near that setup and I can play with setting's on high with no problems.

It seems strange that the sound would effect the gfx but certainly not out of the question. How about the on board sound? The sound card may be the reason.

ok glad your clarified that I thought so but wasn't sure.

Here try this click "run" and type in dxdiag.exe and press enter key

you don't have to check for signatures. This will bring up a menu check the sound/music sections and do the test tell me if it has any problems. Also you should check out the other tabs as well because it may not be sound related after all.

It's very strange that it happened on 2 different sound devices with different drivers.

I'm just going to run down some other things some you may know about some you may not.

*In the control panel there is sound related icon you can check out.
*The device manager has hardware sound related info.
*there is a new patch available for oblivion
*even if you have dx 9.0c already installing it again will take care of many problems. This happens when files from dx get overwriten and no longer can be found.I had it happen to me recently.

Nah god only hates those who hate him besides you and me are small fish in the grand scheme of things.LOL

Well it's like this direct x is the go between api that uses the hardware and game.If direct x is fine and it's not the hardware then it's something else.I have never seen this problem and don't have an answer.

What sucks about oblivion is that it does not have an alternative audio source setting(like eax audio) so unfortunately your stuck with that. It's rare that the sound would effect the gfx so I'm not sure, but at least we got it out of the way.

Perhaps someone better than me will come along so check back every once and awhile.Until then sorry I couldn't solve it and good luck.
