What you are asking will depend on much you have to spend. I did a lot of shopping and research some time ago; I had 4000 dollars to spend. The best of the hi def pictures I saw were the LCD televisions but for what I had to spend, I could only get a 32" (or was it 36), anyway, 42" LCD were about $7000. I looked at all the plasmas in my price range but didn't like them. There were other hi def plasmas that were really nice (still thought the LCDs were better) but in either case, I couldn't afford them without selling the ranch. It was clear that I had to get a rear projection if I wanted a great picture for what I had to spend. I didn't like the DLPs, the pictures were bright but seemed a bit grainy to me. I went for a 42" LCD rear projection which I've had for roughly eight months and I'm still very happy with. The thing with rear projections (like everything else, I suppose) you have to avoid the cheapies or you'll get bad blacks, uneven light, lamps that blow out, bad viewing angles etc. For 4,000 though, I couldn't find anything with a better pic than the LCD rear projection ... none of the plasmas in that price came even came close but you're apt to get a lot of different opionions here...opinions are all well and fine but be sure to do you're homework and research too!

Fortunately, nowadays $4k will get you an excellent HTDV.

I agree with gerry1 that you shuold do you're homework and research.

Typically, Rear projection TV's are cheapest, then DLP, then LCD, then Plasma (Cheapest for the Size)
Projection TV's and DLP have the longest life, and you only need to worry about the bulb. Then LCD, and then Plasma.
LCD and Plasma have the vulnerability to burn-in (ghost) images.
Picture Quality: Typically, Plasma and LCD displays provide better image clarity and other things of that nature.

I don't really know much about projectors. From the one's I've seen in action, I've never really been impressed.

There are LCD and DLP that are rear projection which is what I got, i.e. an LCD rear projector. Eight months ago anyway, the money I had to spend would buy me a really good LCDorDLP rear projection, or a plasma HD that was crappy. I'm happy with my choice though; pic is very bright and really awesome.

went for a tour though my favourite tv store today, the sony lcd projection looked the best , but why does sony insist on framing their tv sets with silver, the toshiba dlp cinema series looked smart with a jet black finish everywhere no distracting silver bezel or shiny knobs, when it comes down to it the cinema series toshiba gets great reviews as well, oh well lots of time to look

@zest: I have one of sony's higher end LCD rear projections and I totally love it; picture is astounding but you're right, the encasement or frame or whatever its called is downright butt ugly but it would be in black too. The design is clumsy looking somehow but the reviews on it were so damned good and the picture so astounding that I bought it anyway; the butt ugly silver frame didn't seem terribly important given the other considerations.
