I dont know what I am doing wrong. I have used DVD-Rs for years now, but I had always heard DVD+rs are just as good.....

Well I am now not so sure of that as I purchased a pack of Verbatim DVD+rs. Got a great deal from buy.com for $32.99 for 100 with free shipping.

But that is not the problem. The problem is every single DVD Movie that I try to creatue burn, copy, whatever onto DVD+rs does not read in my Home DVD Player (Either of them, I have two), My Xbox, My sisters DVD player, My brothers DVD Player, or even my moms DVD Player.

It plays fine on my PC. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Is there some special trick to making DVD+rs work as standard DVDs for movies.

And please dont get angry if this is posted before, I have searched through all the forums, looked over every guide and I did not see any listing of this problem. But please, if someone could help me I would be extremly greatful. I am very short of cash at the moment and I need to get these dvds of my sisters kids put together and have them ready for Thanksgiving so the family can see them. Please anyone help?

If your drive is not recognizing the media you probably need a firmware update.

You did not state what version of firmware your drive is using. Go to this link:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

It has the latest upgrade for your drive. Download it to your desktop and double click on it. It will flash your drive. This should then recognize the media that you are using.

    Cheers.

also what do you burn with? I would try dvd decrypter mode>iso>write if it is a iso you are burning or do a movie in a program that can like clonedvd2 or dvd shrink. and try booktyping dvd+r to dvd-rom with dvd decrypter. it makes dvd+r 100x more compatible with everything. search for a guide on it on this site

Actually its not my drive, it recognizes the the dvd+rs fine and burns to them fine and even plays them fine.

But the disks will not play on any of my home entertainement items. Xbox, Two Dvd Systems, my Sisters, brothers and Mothers DVD Players. These players are the standalone kind that you hook up to your home theater system. I have a pretty large computer so carrying it back and fourth for when we have family get togethers would be about impossible.

So basically its my understanding there is a way to burn DVD+rs to make them more compatiable. Has anyone heard of this? if so do you know a method please.

hi, what you're looking for (over and above ensuring your burner's firmware is current ie that's best to check anyway as recommended by 9mmruger1) is 'booktyping' otherwise known as 'bitsetting'. ie changes +R discs to 'dvd-rom' format thus fooling standalone players to thinking they're playing a normal 'pressed' dvd that you'd buy ie an original dvd movie disc. here's a an example link - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/254313

[bold]HOWEVER[/bold] NEC drives by default cannot booktype (one reason why i won't buy NEC drives), it can be done with some 'unofficial' firmware ie here's a fantastic site - http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware

[bold]but[/bold] it's not something to do lightly... you'd have to be very careful to pick the right firmware, even i can't see the right one for your drive a the moment, lot of choices there... it would depend if your drive is an original NEC drive as there's HP, TDK etc in that list

Hmm well I do know there is a new firmware out for my Nec drive. I have downloaded it and just not been able to locate my boot disk to install it.

And honestly I have heard of this problem it usually has to do with older cheap drives just not reading properly and it was my understanding that Booktype was the fix, but if NEC cannot do Booktype that would explain why my attempt with DvD Shrink failed as well as I tried making it a book type.

Hmm wonder if my older 4x Pioneer DVD-Rw will burn and read DVD+rws.

As far as my NEC goes is there any way to tell what it is? Just in case it is not, as you stated an actual NEC.

And thanks again for great advice and help friend,

    Dizzy

no worries. not sure how to check properly other than opening the PC and checking the label on the drive, not sure if all 'original' NEC drives say NEC on the front..

    Hey friend,

Wonder if I might trouble you with one more question.

For the 2510A Do you know which modified firmware I should use to make it possible for me to write book type DVD+rs so they will be recognized as standard dvd-rs when played on my home theater based (Not PC) dvd player.

(Modified firmware site for the model I have, Click on top left on NEC 2500/2510)
    http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

So far it will definaty not read dvd+rs.

Thank you much up front friend.

P.S. Another strange thing is the fact that my Xbox, when using Xbox Media Center as my default dashboard, will play dvd+rs by default. In other words you put the DVD+r in and have auto run on and it will start, but I cant go into any menus or into other movies (Like having a season one disk that has several movies on it). So it will only play one movie with no disk setup. I am guessing since it does play the +r it appears this is just a update issue. Meaning I need to update to a newer version of Xbox Media Center. Also the default Xbox DVD Player I downloaded will not recognize DVD+rs at all. Maybe another update needed.

Now they play on launch and I can read them fine in ftp mode and copy files off them, but playing them properly is a no go. So my question is, anyone have this setup and noticed the problem or does anyone have the probem or even better found a fix?

Thanks again for all advice and help,

    Daniel

Also more confusing is it unless I am misunderstanding the hacked firmwars they are providing only work with Dual Layer disks.

Is that correct? If its not I cant find any under the 2510 that do not state DL Bitsetting.

Also sorry to be a pest friend, just had this info driving me nuts for a bit, would be great to get it all figured out. :)
