Hi Guys i was looking to buy a new sound card with optical out for my sony surround kit. If i used the optical out as the connection for my surround kit would it work for my mp3 files and games thanks.

    of course it would.

audio out is audio out. if your sending sound to your speakers through an optical cable then your going to be able to hear everything through it. sounds cards dont pick and choose whether they send sound from specific programs or songs.

I was just wondering because when you look at an optical cable with a dvd or cd player they have a red light at the end and i thought it was a lazer reading off the disk. I dont know much about optical audio

    no no no...

the red light is a laser but its not the same laser that read your disc.

that laser is the optical audio signal.. optic audio transfer is faster and higher quality than the standard wiring method
