Well first message on the new thread. As for the 2.30 Firmware, I've been using it since it was released and have found no real problems with it. My DD2030 still won't read/format a Maxwell 4x DVD+RW. I guess it just doesn't like the 4x+RW's, it will try to format a blank one but after the first shot the maxwell's just lock the system up.
Hello All its been a while. Well i no longer own an optorite drive THANKGOD as i found it just too much of a problem. Instead i tried to take it back saying it didnt perform to its stated specification having never burned at 4x on any media and on most occcasions not recording correctly at 2.4. Now i know there are alot of people having trouble with these drives as this forum shows. I mean have a look at the numbers on this thread and you lot still think the ARU from sony is a turkey. Your all suffering from some kind of dillusion, you have bought a turkey that doesnt do what its supposed to do record accurately all the time at 4x speed on any media. You are the consumer stand up for your rights!! Anyways i got my pioneer A06 and have now made 40 backups on several types of media all at 4x with not one coaster. Oh i couldnt take my optorite back so i binned it ( Yeah Where It Belongs ) dont put up with second best get what ur money said it would get you. Nights
I don't think that Optorite is a so not good burner. I made a lot of backup of my DVD and burned some backup of my HDs, and I have to say that they works not so bad. I almost used -R media (I haven't already burned a +R, only some +RW), and they works on my Thomson's standalone DVD player. Now I tried new firmware and I have to say that it works. I only use RitekG04 or Princo 4X media and they works on any DVD iI have (one on my VAIO laptop, one on my PC's and on the standalone).
I guess this is as good a thread as any to start posting in. I'm the main systems builder for a small store that sells PCs, and we've recently gotten in both the DD0201 and DD0203 drives. I've installed the DD0201 in my work machine, to check out how well it works, as we plan on offering it in system builds and for regular sale. The truth is, the price on this drive is pretty damn good. Workstation Specs: ----------------------------------------------- FIC AU-13 Motherboard AMD XP 2400+ Processor (2) 512MB PC-2100 DDRAM ATI Radeon 9200 Pro Video Card (2) IBM Deskstar 40GB 7200rpm Hard Drives Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM Drive (black) Optorite DD0201 DVD/RW Drive (black) Lian-Li PC-60B Case (with window) Windows XP Professional (all patches) Nero 6.0.0.28 Ultra Edition DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 DVD X Copy ----------------------------------------------- The drives were delivered with firmware 1.0, which I didn't learn of until today. After reading the prior monster-thread regarding these drives, I downloaded the 2.30 update, just in case. And yes, I [bold]did[/bold] read that entire thread. No small feat indeed. The only problem I had encountered with the drive, using the 1.0 firmware, were problems formatting DVD+RW media. I did my best to pick a few types of media that met the compatibility list on Optorite's website. Yes, it was [bold]not[/bold] cheap by any means...but, the TDK DVD+R's I purchased worked great with not a coaster after 10 burns, and the resulting discs played just fine in all set-top players to date. So the only problem I've had so far, as I mentioned before, was with formatting some Phillips DVD+RW discs I had tried in the drive. It would lock-up, requiring a reboot in order to even get the disc out. So, seeing this problem, I decided to upgrade the firmware to the 2.30 version I had on hand. Needless to say, the drive works even better now, and I've had no subsequent problems with the DVD+RW discs I have. I've read a lot of people's comments regarding this drive's pickiness with media, and I can't honestly give much of an opinion yet, as I've only tried 3 different brands of media. I'll possibly post more results as we try different media in the drives. I'm heavily considering this drive over the Plextor 708A, or the Pioneer A06, simply because of the price, and the fact that so far, the drive has worked just fine for me. However, I will be checking current prices on both Plextor's and Pioneer's drives through our distributor. Needless to say, the DVD/RW scene is certainly shaping up to be fun indeed! Oh, and as a last note: DVD Shrink is [bold]definitely[/bold] a kick-ass product! I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone. I've had good luck with the DVD X Copy as well...but being able to fit just the movie itself onto one disc is a boon to be sure. Cheers! Thanks for the good info _ender. I haven't had much to complain about my DD0203 since I got it except for the fact that I gave $196.00 US for it. Lot lower price now, well let's face it, I gave $1465.00 US for a 1.08 gig HD.... 1992 price....
Had good luck with this drive using staples 2x DVD-R media. About 10 DVDs later I made the mistake of backing up a data CD to a CD-RW. BLUE SCREENS OF DEATH ever since! Tried updating firmware multiple times. Every other day the computer thinks its a CD-ROM. Wont even read DVDs anymore. Any suggestions for a new burner? I received the MagicSpic BDVDRW8D for christmas which I read is actually an optorite 401. They're starting to work under assumed names, beware.
I'm guessing that you are using Windows XP as an OS. I would make sure that that it's not XP that is causing the problem because it's sounds like it is. Run something like Norton's Win Doctor or System Mechanic on your system. If you have never done this before you will be surprised on how many errors that it will find in the OS. Hope this helps. The other thing to do is get with IOMagic's support forums and see what problems others might be having with this drive.
I finally upgraded to v2.30. They finally got this one 95-100% right. Using growisofs 5.14 I burnt a dvd video onto prico 4X -R media, using stock video single session mode. It worked flawlessly in APEX AD-1100W Playstation2 Laptop 8121 It won't work in my old APEX AD-600A. I have little hope any DVD-R will work in that though. Only problem: It burnt the 4x disc @ 2x. : P (growisofs does report 4x, but takes 2x time) I'm still not sure if the speed issue is due to firmware or growisofs. Dave
The brand of DVD-R disk that you are using does seem to make a difference. I've burned Princo's that work in my home player but not in my Compaq 2410 notebook. The Compaq doesn't even know that the Princo's are in there, however, the same copy burned on a Ritek works fine. The Optorite also doesn't work with Memorex 4x DVD+RW's for me.
Got the Optorite DD0201 for Xmas, Updated my drive to Firmware update 2.30 with no problems at all, Now new Firmware update 2.50 & thats worked fine for me aswell (windows EXE. update not DOS) Have had no problems yet, BLOODY GOOD DRIVE & cheap too.
