Can anyone provide me with some answers to some of questions I have about how a media file is played?

I understand that A Media Container holds the data streams for the audio and video. A demultiplexer then takes the two streams and sends them to their corresponding codecs which then decode the streams and get rendered by your media player.

So what I want to know is, is the support for the media container(MKV, AVI, ect) built into the media player or can it be added? How does the media player know what demultiplexer to use? How does the demultiplexer know what codecs to use? Where are the codecs stored and what extensions do they use?

Can anyone help answers these questions I have? I have tried searching but have found no results. Thanks in advance :)
