Let me start by saying I'm a newbie. I've recently purchased a hard drive media player that connects to my TV. I'm in the process now of backing up my dvd's using dvdshrink and then transfering them to my new media player.I spent several days researching the best way to compress my dvd's and decided that dvdshrink was the way to go. I can compress my dvd's to about 3-4gb with decent results. My question is can dvdrebuilder compress a dvd to less than a dvd-r size - like 3gb and produce better results. I obviously want to make my dvd's as small as possible because of my limited hard drive space (320gb), but still get good quality. Thanks.
Yes you can change the size of the output size in DVD Rebilder by doing the below.... Go to the program derictory of DVD-Rebuilder. Most should be My Computer/C: Drive/Program FIles/DVD-RB/ Now once in that folder look for the file named REBUILDER.INI Right click on the file and choose open with (NOTEPAD) Now add the below line under the [Options] list of the INI file. TargetSectors=(put whatever size you want the output to be) I think it is 2KBs per sector so do the math. But this will not help with saving room on your HDD. Rebuilder needs extra space to put the Temp files while encoding the DVD. But you can set it up to delete the Temp files once it finishes the project. Are you plaining on burning the movies to disc or leaving them on your HDD to watch? 320gb HDD is plenty enough room to do a full backup of the DVD. Your going to loose alot of quility encoding the DVD all the way to 3GB know matter if you use DVD Rebuilder or DVD Shrink. But you would get better quility with DVD Rebuilder in anycase.
Thanks for the info. When I bought this thing I was under the impression that I could compress my dvd's to about 1gb and load them onto the player. And with a 320gb hard drive I was (foolishly) expecting it to hold about 300 dvd's. It plays divx and xvid files as well as some others. I did a lot of research and tried several different divx conversion programs. Frankly it was just a pain in the ass. I also wanted to retain all the menu functions which divx will not do. So Dvdrebuilder might be my best solution because unlike Shrink, it is an encoder. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.
Try using Gordian Knot it is a good DivX/Xvid converter. http://www.autogk.me.uk/ I would suggest using that if your wanting to put alot of movies on the media player. You should bebale to output each movie with a size around 700MG. Of course you wont get menus with it. But it would be the smart way to go if your wanting alot of movies on the Media Player.
