I watched several videos on Youtube in regards to playing ps2 and ps1 games on ps3... the slim one not the already compatible ps3. I see there is an app on the playstation store for PS2 data. Will this enable ps2 for slim? Is it possible to play any ps2 games on slim? Whats the definitive answer. I have 3 broken ps2 machines so playing on ps3 would be nice.
The only function of the PS2 Data on the PSN Store is to enable Backwards Compatible PS3s to play PS2 games that required some sort of HDD installation. The best example of this I can think of is Final Fantasy 11. So no, it does not enable slims to play PS2 games...although I wish it did.
Sony won't do it until the scene does it...then sony will release something that is not as good, and they will praise themselves for doing such a kind thing in such a timely manner.
Someone posted an article showing that sony were thinking about releasing an adaptor which would allows PS2 games to be played. This was kindda surprising as we all know that they have already have a software emulator for it, it was on the 2nd gen consoles which didnt have the emotion chips in them. So this just shows that sony are more interested in making an extra buck then giving someone back to their customers!
2ng gen consoles did have special hardware; just not as much of it. Regardless, sony has filed patents on both an external hardware addon and an all-software solution...but they don't want to release them because then they can't sell you your PS2 games all over again through the PSN store.
