    Hello,
    I have the Packard Bell IMEDIA J2412 and would like to upgrade the memory but am unsure as to which size/speed to buy.

    I want to put 4gb of RAM into it and have a Packard Bell San Francisco Motherboard , i understand that i need a
    DDR SDRAM PC2-4200 but cant seem to find any 2gb that operates at 266mhz - which i think is the maximum i can get? Can you please advise me.

    If i need to i can change the motherboard but would not have a clue as to which one i would need. I have an E4500 2.20 GHZ cpu.

    I would very much appreciate some help.

    Its 32bit, an increase to 3.5 would still be great though.

    My main confusion is with the speed of the ram, after going through the packard bell info centre i read that the max speed ram it can support is 266mhz, but when i went to buy one i could not find any 2gig that ran at that speed...

    Will the speed not be an issue? Most of the pc5300's ive seen are 667mhz

    266mhz is for ddr ram not ddr2 but you are using ddr2 ram.

    Here is where my confusion lies. I copy and pasted this from the Packard Bell Centre...

    System Memory

    * 2 X 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM slots
    * Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
    * DDR2 400 / DDR2 533
    * Support for up to 4 GB system memory

    DDR2 SDRAM:

    * PC2-4200 or DDR2-533: operates at a maximum of 266 MHz.
    * PC2-5300 or DDR2-667: operates at a maximum of 333 MHz.

    PC2-5300 or DDR2-667: operates at a maximum of 333 MHz.
    what i marked in red is what to look for so don't worry about 266 or 333mhz. don't buy the ram from packard bell as you'll most likely pay a lot more then from local computer store for the same ram.

    try kingston or ocz. also see who makes your ram as it won't be packard bell.

    Im back again unfortunately.

    All attempts to contact Packard Bell about my issue have been unsuccessful so once again im looking for the help of those more knowledgeable than i.

    Ok, from the top....

    PC: Packard Bell IMEDIA J2412
    Motherboard : San Francisco Motherboard bv pt890-8237a

    I have the above PC and Motherboard and am trying to find out if i can upgrade the RAM to 4gig. I keep finding conflicting information as to whether it is possible. In the Packard Bell Info Centre it says that yes, i can upgrade to 4gig, but everywhere else it says no, i cannot.

    This is taken directly from my personalised help page on the Packard Bell site:

    "System Memory

    * 2 X 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM slots
    * Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
    * DDR2 400 / DDR2 533
    * Support for up to 4 GB system memory

    If you have more than 2 GB of memory installed the System Properties dialogue box and the System Information tool may report less memory than is actually installed. You can find more details on the Microsoft Support Website".

    I took the existing dimms out to find out the manufacturer and it just has an "M" logo, no name. Also i went to the Packard Bell Sales site and checked out the dimms they are selling, its the Crucial 2GB DDR2-533 PC2-4200 DIMM. I then contacted a third party retailer and he informed me that it would not work on my PC.

    I realise im repeating a lot of what is in my other posts but am just trying to be thorough.

    Once again any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance,

    Gavin.

    This is the item i was asking about:

    CRUCIAL 4GB DDR2 533 PC2 4200 533MHZ

    This is the response i got:

    "No this item is not compatible. Our records indicate the following Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.
    It would be your best interest to check with your manufacturer to see if this item is compatible as we are getting conflicting information".

    The conflicting information he mentions is the Packard Bell Info Centre saying i can use up 4gb ram with my model pc.

    you can have a total of 4gig but not in 1 slot. as you posted you have 2 ram slots then get 2-2gig sticks of ram.
