    Hello,

I run into this problem every once awhile of viewing the backup. the movie either pause or stop halfway through the movie. If it does resume, it skip part of the move. I am using Shrink, and Nero 6.6.x.18 and Nec -3500 with XP Pro. The DVD+r DL firmware 2.1a is Verbatim, and the speed I am buring is at 2.4. As far as the computer I have 30 gb free, and 512 memory, and I have DMA turn for all the drives. Does anyone run into this problem or have suggestion what I might try?

    Thanks

for what i know is nero doesnot handle layer break well. why not use Imgburn and DVDd to burn dl disc. both programs handle layer break better than Nero.

Well same problem here, oddly enough I wasted 2 of my Verbs in this experience, as soberfree states nero does not handle layer break well, but did you burn using an option that states "add layer flag"?, Last time I burned I used this option (using Ricoh media) and the problem went away.

Layer break is the point at which the optical laser shifts from the first layer on the DVD DL to the second. That's the flicker you sometimes see about the middle of a factory DVD. Some ripper software removes the layer break, some allows it to be kept intact. Nero 6 was notorious for having problems of handling the layer break setup on a DL. Nero 7 is better. DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink both handle DL fairly well, both are free. ImgBurn (free) is the updated version of DVD Decrypter, just more bells and whistles, both developed by LUK.

2 mistakes. All caps are against forum rules. Plus it's annoying to read if you've tried it lately. They say it's like shouting in print. Mods usually comment on it. It only bothers me because it's more difficult to read. Plus, it sort of looks like you want help in the middle of another help thread. No problem if it's the same type problem. But you didn't say you were trying to record with dual layer media. I explained the layer break. Putting in a layer flag is just telling the app where the break is, easier said than done. If not in the right place it can cause a noticable freeze in the backup. For you I'd suggest you find Alkohol's guide on doing a backup with Decrypter if you're using DL. If just needing a tutorial on doing a backup to a DVD5 (4.7) take a look in the guide section.
DMA is merely the interface mode the drives are in. Normally they're in DMA. If you start seeing an extreme slowdown in drive operation, then check to see if the drives are in DMA. Just do a search, it's been covered countless times. That or find me, I may have 1 more good explanation on it left.

Thanks for the reply, and information brobear. The question I have is which program to find the "add layer flag". I am currently using Shrink, and Nero 6 for backups. I have try looking in both programs, but the only thing I have come across is "removing layer break" Could you point in the right direction?

    Thanks again!!!

You would have had a better chance of getting those questions answered on the Nero Discussion section. For DL I don't use Nero. I've been using the free DVD Decrypter to burn from a Shrink encode for DVD9. DVDD sets up the layer break. I've done it with both layer break removed and not removed in Shrink and the last I did with the Remove Layer Break unchecked and in DVDD the option for DVDD to set the layer break optimally from the auto setting. I've not watched all the movie, but can't find the break fast forwarding and the movie plays great. So, the worst I'll get is a noticable layer break.

If you keep the layer break through Shrink, I'm wondering if the switch will go in Nero 6 on the burn, not sure. I switched to Nero 7, so can't help you there. DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn are both good burners, both from LUK, and they both are free and handle dual layer burning. ImgBurn is the update of the DVDD burner.
