dosnt sound good. boot it into safe mode to see if the problem repeats itself. to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart. it will help to rule out software/driver problem

Get hold of a linux cd or make your own like ubuntu,it's free even if you order the cd,then attempt to boot from it & load the linux distro that's on the cd,basicly it's a quick check of the cpu, mobo, power supply,ram,dvd-rom drive as all those are used which would leave only a corruption of the OS,a faulty hdd, faulty IDE cable,or circuitry to the hdd,if any one can add feel free to do so

    ***Need more information***
What were you doing when you first noticed the problem?
Have you made any changes to the system, which may of caused this?
Have you added any software or hardware?
Does the PC lock up when your starting it, before the Windows Logo, or does it lock up after your in Windows XP?
When it locks up, do you hear any beeping sounds? If so, how many beeps do you hear?

Go Start> Run> Type in dxdiag> Click Save All Information> Save the Text file somewhere (remember where)> Open it Up> Press Ctrl+A to Select All> Then Ctrl+C to copy it and paste all that here..

And We'll take it from there..
