hey everyone i was just wondering if someone could help me, or direct me to a program that will help improve the speed/ problems on my pc.. well this is my story i have p4 2.6 2.0gb of ram, windows xp media edition. my pc use to run pritty good but i noticed that last while it slowed down, longer to open up ie page, start up, etc. i have avast and avg 8.0 free edition for my virus protection, i also have ad-ware 2007 for spyware. i know that there is a problem because when i go to defag my pc it gives me an error " Disk defragmenter could not start" why i don't know, thisis the first time that had ever happen to me. and there are other programs like winace that i uninstalled but it still has the name in the all programs menu. i have doing virus check and spyware checks with all the programs and i deleted whatever it found. i realy do not want to format my drive i have allot of need info. oh ya i have a program register cleaner v6 that i also ran to see if it would find or correct anything but no go. well i am stumped on this, i forgot the command that is used to check to see what programs are running on startup, maybe that would help. is there anything that i could do or use to help correct this problem? any help would be much appreciated. if more info is need please ask. Thanks Shawn305

The biggest cause of slowdown is having too much protection on your computer running in the background. Most antispyware programs have to analyze all reads/writes to the hard drive in real-time.

My advice is to only have the following,
1.firewall (basic firewall only not a bloated suite)
2.antivirus (your free basic avg 8.0 is perfect) it's what I use.
3.use firefox browser (very resistant to virus attack)
4.use the free "returnil" as a antispyware software when surfing the internet (no virus/malware will defeat this program). Also returnil won't slowdown the computer, you won't even know it's running except for a red icon next to the clock.

Do not install any antispyware program, not really needed. Most antivirus programs do a good job, anything that gets through your antivirus will be caught in "returnil" and be deleted during reboot.

The only hardware related problems that will cause slowdown of computer is if your hard drives are set on PIO instead of DMA. Also if your hard drives have file corruption, that will cause the hard drives to be slow to startup. A simple scandisk (with the box to fix errors checked) can fix that.

My thinking is that your antispyware programs are slowing you down. That's what was slowing down my computer.
