Hi,anyone out there that can guide me step by step on how to retrieve all files etc from my hard drive. My pc keeps booting itself, reaching the start options & then boots again.I have tried safe mode but same happens.I have a disc to wipe the hdd clean but I need to get saved documents from it before I do.I have never done this before and not very computer minded hence the request for step by step. The start up problem I will leave for another day.Any advice will be much appreciated.P.S I have read a few threads on the subject but can't pinpoint what I need,If there is a thread please point me in the right direction,THANKS.

it seems windows is missing some very important files that are required at boot, these files are usually lost either to a bad partition/virus/old drive

to retrieve files off your drive or copy the entire disk use
partition logic basically if you dont want to buy an enclosure (useful u should get one anyway) its a free alternative that works:)

Tried partition logic but after it checking hardware etc I end up with a complete blue screen.I followed the instructions, copied iso with nero, then tried Imgburn, same result.
    Any ideas.

if have another hd, set it up as master without the sick hd connected so can then load xp onto new hd. once windows is loaded, connect the old drive as slave or secondary master in place of rom drive & then be able to pull off what info you want. programs won't be able to be saved if they have been installed. if don't have another hd then use a friend's computer & set your drive on the secondary cable if ide. both methods work as that is how i do it unless the hd has gone bad like the 1 i'm working on now. can use data recovery programs in this link if you run into that situation. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/504626/3048579
