Hi guys. Up until now ive never had a problem with my pc but tonight its powered off three times whilst ive been doing different things on it. The power stays on my speakers, modem and dvd rw but the hard drive shuts down completely. Any ideas???
is the dvdrw an external drive? when you say hard drive do you mean the tower or the hard drive inside the tower?
The dvd rw is external its the tower that powers off. The temp seems fine and the pc hadnt been on for an extended period of time. Id been on it around an hour before it powered off
Sorry, forgot to mention that the memory seems to be slowly dwindling when i click on My Computer. Its been going down gradually in small amounts. Does that have anything to do with my problem?
el oh el Whens the last time you ran any spyware tools? You might have a bunch of stuff running in the background. This can also cause your cpu or any other hardware that is heat sensitive, to shut down the pc. Try running something like spybot when you can. I'd also take a look in the event viewer for any hardware related problems.
Amazingly enough it doesnt look like that lol!!! Ive good Uniblue Spy Eraser etc and run it daily to get rid of all the crap. Ive also went into the registry to make sure that i know what programs are running and ive taken out all of the unneccessary ones so it should run quickly. To be honest, its not that its slow its just shut down when it shouldnt
Yea, if the cpu or any other heat sensitive hardware gets too hot, it will do that. What are you doing when it shuts down? It could be several things causing the problem. Have you checked the event viewer for any hardware or software errors?
Ive been doing different things when its cut off. The first time im was watching a film on media player and the second time i was on the internet. Sorry to sound like a halfwit but how do i get into the event viewer?
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel Depends on what view you have set, but it should be located under Administrative Tools. If you don't see that, switch to classic view from the explorer menu. When you get that open, check through the application and system menus at or around the time your system crashed. Hopefully that will give you an idea of what is going on.
Im running spybot now and have had a look in the event viewer. Im not quite sure what im looking for but there are quite a few warnings and errors from dchp and service control manager respectively
Yea, most of that is normal. I get that stuff all the time. I would look for any errors that occurred at the time your PC shut down. Make sure you note the time, so that next time this happens you might be able to pin point the problem.
To be honest, im not exactly sure what time it went off at and i put it right back on again after it powered down. This has been a one off up til now but if it happens again, i will know where to look for the problem. If its something im not sure of i can always come back on and ask. Thanks to everybody who tried to help
