I am troubleshooting for a friend. The problem is that when he inserts a burned dvd into his dvd-rw drive his computer automatically restarts and continues to restart untill the dvd is removed. Original dvds work fine only burnt ones cause this problem. I don't know any specs of his pc, I just wanted know if anyone has heard of this and/or knows how to fix it? I can find out specs on his pc, but I thought I would ask first. I know he has Windows XP.

That is weird. I never heard of that before. That's going to be a toughie!

1)What's the brand name, format, and speed rate of his media?
2)How fast did he burn them?
    3)What programs did he/she use?
4)What other dvd programs are loaded on their pc? Example: 5)Nero/Roxio/anydvd/Dvd43.
5)What are they backing up,and how they are backing up?
6)Brand name/model #/and current firmware version of their drive?
7)Is the backup set to region free or the proper region?
    8)Pal or NTSC format?
9)How do stand alone players fare with those backups?
    10)Can you play his/her backups?
11)Also what program are they viewing the backups with? Powerdvd, windvd, windows, etc.
    12) Is this a backup that was made on a pc or a stand alone tv recorder? Maybe not finalized?
    13) Any paper/sticker labels on them?

Backup dvds are harder for some dvd drives to read..Whether it's dvd-rom-dvd-rw drives, stand alone players,or game consoles. Usually it's a format issue.Their pc is having a severe reaction to them.

When a dvd drive doesn't like a particular backup, usually a no disc error appears: No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong region/Illegal disc/or wrong format message appears. Shutting down the pc,very weird.

    1) You need some other drives to verify those backups to make sure they are at least playable on some drives.

    2) Tell your friend to go into device manager,cdrom/dvd drives:Locate that reader drive, uninstall drivers to that dvd-rw drive, reboot, and xp should reinstall drivers for it.

    3) Could be codecs? I never messed with them.

    4) Media quality? Crap media can do a number on dvd drives, especially if they were burned too fast and burned too close to the outer edge.

    5) Unfinalized disc,if it's off a stand alone burner for the tv.

It is going to be a challenge to resolve that issue.

guess?.. autorun is on, and it's the xp bug with avi file thumbnails causing explorer to quit. In this case some hardware panic is causing a complete reboot.

Possibly?.. some malware or drm feature from some application.

Solution.. drive properties.. turn autorun off, and change default folder view across the board to list.
Full system a/v and spyware scan.
Clean registry with good tool.. like ccleaner.

if its OEM then its cancer could be the most evil dvdsentry bug....

    download and install ccleaner
    http://www.ccleaner.com/
once installed go to the tool>startup area>

now this is what your looking for:

    something like this
HKLM:Run [] dvdsentry ......(forgot this info sry)
anyway if you see something labeled dvdsentry then simply delete the entry (this will no delete the program but stop it from booting at login), dvdsentry is a little program that OEM computers come with to prevent dvd companies from doing some sort of......at any rate dvdsentry has been know to cause a lot of heartache and often interferes with the OS for the worse:(
