For your desktop icons: right-click on desktop, arrange icons by, and make sure Show Desktop Icons is checked.

-When you mean Start Menu, do you mean the taskbar doesn't appear or there's no items when you goto Start?

Try booting up in safe mode, and see if you can go to System Restore. Restore to an early point than the one you are at, now.

could be a registry problem with windows... you could try downloading [bold]Registry Mechanic[/bold] as it really helped me with a similar problem I had with windows...

    Its worth a try :)

CTRL*ESC brings up the start menu.

Did you try logging in with another Account?? ie: Administrator or another user??

Someone mentioned corrupt registry; that is a good guess; I've heard that before too; so, try a windows repair or you may have to re-install the OS.

    read this before doing anything:

    Keep us posted.

    Try this:

    -go to ctrl-alt-del
-switch to apps tab, click new task
-type in "explorer.exe" minus the quotes (this isn't iexplore)

If everything comes up, try restarting and see if it comes up straight next time.

U need to reinstall windows. basically some spyware / virus / trojan has messed up your pc so badly that explorer wont load when it starts up ( i no bcuz it happened to me ) you can either load explorer yourself evrytime you load windows by goin into taskmanager, applications, new task, explorer. or do a fresh reinstall of windows (this is the better option)and make sure you use a good anti spyware product (microsoft anti spyware is pretty good), keep it up to date and run scans often to keep spyware off your machine or youll just end up with the same problem again.
