Sup people at Afterdawn, My problem is fairly simple but I dont know what to do anymore with this case. I try playing a game and then I get error messages like (Gathering Exception Data) and then it closes or simply the game crashes and windows tells me to report the problem. Weeks ago I had a problem with the capaciters being blown I fixed this by getting a new power supply (Coolmax 550w)thinking it would fix my problem with the games. I tried running all my games and nothing still the same case. I also scanned the Pc for the Sasser virus but still nothing. Pc Specifications- (CPU)AMD Athlon Xp +2000 (Video Card)ATI Radeon 7000 2 Hard drives (80gig Boot-Drive Primary Master,200gig Secondary Slave) 1 DVDRW drive (SOHW-1693S) 1 CDRW drive Note-Im starting to think it might be my Boot-up hard drive. or my video card. Games tested- Halo Combat Evolved, Dungeon Siege 2. Ask me any other questions and Ill answer as soon as possible. Your Help Will Be appreciated.
That's quite an interesting post. Although the blown cpacitor problem you mentioned may have damaged your hardware, if it boots windows fine, i really doubt that's the case. Your Video card is very old by the standards of the games you've mentioned, and may require a software upgrade or even replacement. If any game claims a minimum requirement of 32MB or higher, A 7000 really isn't going to be sufficient. I don't think there is any problem with your boot disk, if as i said it boots windows, there's unlikely to be a problem there. How Much RAM do you have? If only 256MB it may be worthwhile upping this too, but if greater then you've enough to play most games. Halo requires a minimum graphics card of 32MB memory size, which is what your card has, so really if the game did load chances are it wouldn't play very smoothly. Dungeon Siege 2 requires 64MB so that's definitely going to need a hardware upgrade. You won't need to buy an expensive replacement card but just one with ideally 128MB of memory or more, such as a Radeon 9250. That'll do and should fix your gaming problem, although you may wish to go further upmarket to play more games in the future.
Sammorris thanks for the reply. I currently have 768 MB of Ram and I checked the video card info with Sisoft Sandra and you are right the video card is outdated and therefor not really usefull. So im currently checking threw Tigerdirect.com and Newegg.com for video cards including the one you mentioned. Thanks again.
You're welcome. 768MB RAM is plenty to play almost any game at reasonable performance, and the rest of your system is certainly up to playing the games you specified, even the processor.
