ok so i recently bought this sata card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YMJ6ZE/ref=oss_product and i tried inserting into my dell xps 420 but it wouldent go in, like it didint fit. http://s407.photobucket.com/albums/...view¤t=dell-xps-420-INSIDE.jpg&newest=1 the photobucket links shows what i think are the 3 extra pci slots that i tried putting the card it but it wouldent fit, what im wondering is, will that card from amazon even fit into my computer? am i trying to put it in the wrong spot or what? i reall really would love some help on this, so if any1 can tell me where i should put this card or if i have to but a PCI Express sata card, it also has those slots, but i most of all want to put this card i just bought in my computer, im not sure what im doing wrong, any help is appriciated. moved to correct forum as not a windows issue. i presume you took the metal back slot blank out before trying to put the card in? does the card pci connector match up to the motherboard pci slot but the backplate prevents the card from going down into the slot?
no, i just compared pci cards with a friend, the short part of the "gold teeth" like theres a long one then a short one, but the short one has 7 gold teeth his has 11...so like wtf, was it made wrong or something?
cory, is the notch on both cards in the same exact spot? that short "part" i have seen longer on certain intel netcards.
although it has nothing to do with the expansion card itself. the pins from the card must fit onto the motherboard otherwise the card will not work. from the photobucket picture above it look like he may have tried inserting the card into the AGP port as well. they are different but have the same function but in this case the number of pins could possibly be the problem
Hardball-Please show me where the AGP port is. Google is your friend. Cory---If you havent fixed it yet, things should fit together. Sometimes the metal tab on the bottom of the faceplate that buries between the motherboard and computer case needs bent just a hair to sink in.
Did you remove those slot covers before attempting install? Also, you have no AGP, only PCI and PCI Express. Those three long white slots should be where you plug into...and the card seems to be a standard PCI. If it will not fit with the rear slot covers removed, you probably are not pressing hard enough.
no agp according to this link http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps420/en/OM/HTML/parts.htm#wp1402834 just pci's & various forms of pci\e. besides he did circle the pci slots in his picture. agreed on both deadrum's & killer's comments.
sorry for taking so long to reply but yes the short parts are in the same spot, and its lines up and everything i made sure the back metal piece wasent longer than the slot on the computer, i thought that might be the problem, but its not, they are perfect fit, everything i perfect fit EXCEPT for the gold teeth the short part of the gold teeth is too short for the slot, its really really wierd, im beginning to think i was sold a product that was actually made wrong or something, unless some slots are small enough for that card.
ok um i replied to ddp b4 reading killerbugs and deadrum33's post but i will try to force it in, i just know that the short part of the gold teeth is shorter then the short part on the slot, and i know that if i had a 10 or 11 that it would probably fit because its barely too short, so those 5 extra teeth might help, i will try forcing it in more anyways
i figured it being too short was the problem, because im not sure if it can fit even its too short as in one of the right size being able to fit and even if its too small, it will still work ive had stuff liek that before so it was just a hunch, my knowledge is limited so it was the best hunch i could think of
If it is just a matter of not having enough pins on the card, but the key still matches, then there isn't a problem...some of the connectors of the PCI slot are not used by some cards...and the cheaper cards ($10 is a very cheap card) will sometimes lack part of the PCI connector if they don't need them.
