Hello All, I'm looking for a DVD player that can play as many formats as possible, especially DivX. I found this Philips model DVP642 for a decent price (around $50 US) Does anyone know if it a good player or suggest another one? Here are the specs from an ad: This is currently the hacker's favorite DVD player. Plays those downloaded movies. DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, AVI. 4x video upsampling enhances all outputs. Also plays JPEG, mpg, Xvid, PAL DVDs, PAL Divx, KVCD, SRT. It also has Progressive scan and 4x upsampling. You can just dump these files on a DVD and it will start playing them. No need to specially format the disk. All feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
hacker's favourite DVD player? I would have thought that MTK based players had a much more active hacked firmware scene. For DivX it should be fine. For XviD it is not so good. I would still recommend an MTK based player though.
So, what is an example of a MTK (what does this stand for) player? Are the KiSS players MTK, is this a chipset or a protocol? I am assuming that the Philips DVP-642 is a ESS (what does that stand for) based player and I am having problems with the video on some Xvid movies.
MTK = Media Tek. They are a chipset manufacturer. Kiss use Sigma chipsets. ESS is another manufacturer. The newer Sigma based players tend to cost much more since they support HD resolutions, wireless networking, internet radio, etc. Overkill if you just want a simple DVD player with MPEG-4/avi support.
