    Hi

I just recently found out about dling movies off the net and burning them to dvd :/. Then I heard about the dvd divx player where i dont need to encode the file to play on the dvd player. Plus it can hold 6 movies on 1 dvd disc. I have tons of avi movies mostly xvid on my desktop. I dont know anything about dvd divx player so I been reading around and got different answers. Some say they can play xvid just fine. Some say the audio for xvid is messed up on the divx player so you gotta convert it first(virtualdub). Then some say its cause the divx player cant read qpel and gmc and that most avi uses qpel and gmc nowadays. I was planning on getting the philips dvp5140 since it can read qpel and gmc but then i saw the dvp5982 with a usb port, which mean no need to burn disc;). But it doesnt said that it can read qpel and gmc. So my question is will the dvp5982 plays xvid avi files and does it plays qpel and gmc?

    Thank You

I've been doing what you're describing for a month or so.. While I don't have that exact Philips DVD player... The one i have is from walmart $40.00 1080i upconvert dvd/divx/avi/ player. dvp3960.. It plays everything i've thrown at it. I DL alot of Divx/Xvid/avi's and only one was messed up as far as video/audio sync but that was how it DL'ed so it wasn't the players fault.
I use the burner that comes with Divx player and drag n drop the files into it. I can get up to 5 movies on 1 DVD and they play back pretty good on my 52" projection TV. It all depends on the avi's quality that you play. Some look better than what i get off the satellite dish..
umm 1 problem you may get is sometimes you get a bad AVI file and for some reason it'll lock up your burn program. If you tried to burn 5 movies and it locked up you have to figure out which movie was the problem. I really like the Divx burner, it does a good job..
BTW, the Philips has a audio sync slide bar adjustment under DIVX menu if you need it, i've never used it but it's there..

Some DivX videos (none that I have downloaded) have this Qpel/GMC feature turned on (it's not a default setting in the codec, so it doesn't apply to most of what's out there).
Some DivX players cannot play those videos that do have this feature turned on.

I have the DVP5982, and it will play Qpel just fine, but it will not play GMC. You'll get sound only and pretty much a still image when trying to play a GMC avi file. When you insert a GMC disc, it will start to play and the audio will play fine, but the video will appear more like a slide show, grabbing various scenes only. A short message will appear that says "video GMC not supported". It'll continue to play in the slide show manner.

It does play all other compressions for .divx, .avi, .mpg files though perfectly and it's been a super DVD player for me for the price. I believe Circuit City has it right now for $60.
