Ok so recently I have formatted my computer, so I have reinstalled all of the codecs I need, and alot of the players I use, but its no use, I cant get any videos to show, you can hear the sound, but no video shows, and I've tried all of the players I use, VLC, media player Classic, Windows media player, Mediasource player, realplayer, and quicktime, and I've installed the XP Lite codec, and MKV lazy man codec, yet it sill doesnt work, I know its not a problem with my video driver because my friend installed the driver which is the same as his and his video works fine. So I was wondering if anybody could help me with this problem.

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm begining to wonder if its a hardware issue. I highly doubt it, but it feels like I've done everything. Format windows, i installed the newest nvidia drivers and codecs..and still i just get the sound. No video...

Could be an OS problem as VLC should play without the need of installing any codecs.

I had this same problem myself!
Formatted the computer, reinstalled my basic software and I'd get sound with a bog black screen when playing any video files (mpeg, avi, divx, even DVDs).
I figured it was a simple codec issue so I downloaded and installed the klcodec pack, the divxtotal pack and the FFdshow pack. I tried installing each one alone, I tried them all installed at once (not suggested), and I still got nothing.
I started to think that it was because I was installing the codecs as a user and not as an admin, so I logged out and repeated the process. Still nothing.

Finally I uninstalled my Nvidia drivers (Version 91.31). As soon as the driver was gone I was able to view exerything I tried!
I've now put version 84.21 on and everything seems to be working very well.

Other versions of the driver may work, but I went back to the last version of the Nvidia driver that did NOT have the control panel console, that thing is a pain in the ass.
    I have a GeForce 6800 card.

Thanks for the recomendation. Same thing for me. I uninstalled the 91.31 drivers and found some older drivers 84.21 and now everything works fine! Hmm is Nvidia aware of this? I am using a Geforce 6200 PCI video card on a Dell Dimension 3000.

Do what we did. Dowload the older driver.
