I looked all over for a place to find the answer to this, but to no avail I fear. Can I play a downloaded movie (avi, mpeg, etc.) on my television simply by using some "out to TV" apparatus that connects my pc to my television?..........normally I convert the files to DVD format beforehand.
if you had a video card that had video out for the tv sure you could, then you'd use your tv just like a monitor...that couldn't go above a certain resolution without some problems. just read up on doing that sorta stuff before hooking your tv up to your computer. There's problems with at least resolution and colors you'd have to deal with. Personally it's more trouble then it's worth. I use the Dlink Media Lounge DSM-320 works great, plays most video's and music. Only thing is you need a home network or atlease two Network cards on you computer. you computer hosts a server application and this Device connects to that server and plays files http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=318&sec=0 They also have a version DSM-520 that supports HD tv and also allows for usd drives to be connected directly -- Tweter
Well I went and tested hookin me T.V. up to the computer. It worked out. I've got a geForce Fx 5200 which has a s-video out. I got a s-video to component video convertor (i got it with some vid card) and then hooked the component video to my vcr and a coaxle cable from my vcr to my tv. I had the TV on before i turned on my computer, the computer recognized it as a display device and diplayed at a resolution of 640x480 at 8bit color. so it's possible to do, i didn't destroy my tv (its a cheapo anyway) and the avi's I played looked alright. however the windows desktop was not the nicest to look at.
