The past few videos(AVIs I have played on my PS2 made are seeming to look better than If I were to burn them as VCDs or SVCDs. Playing AVIs on the DVD Player/PS2 seems almost too good to be true. No long converting neccesary, less disk space(meaning more space for more vids on the CD), etc. What are the advantages+disadvantages to playing AVI format on the PS2/DVD player, vs VCD/SVCD format on the PS2/DVD Player?
There are good reasons for using either format. In the case of AVI (assuming we're talking about MPEG-4), the obvious advantage is better quality and lower filesizes. The disadvantage is not being able to play them in most DVD players, however if this isn't something that matters to you I'd say MPEG-4 is the obvious choice. In the case of VCD/SVCD, the big advantage is far better standalone compatibility, but of course this is at the price of quality, and the fact you need to pay for the encoder if you want the best quality. If standalone compatibility isn't an issue (and if you didn't know about it I'd say it's probably not) then I'd definitely recommend sticking with the AVIs.
