If my backup dvd plays on my pc fine but not on my standalone either a toshiba or ps2 , is this just a media issue?

Yes, the issue most likely lies within the media that your using. I've actually had skipping problems in the past when playing the backups on my ps2. Therefore, you should better quality dvd media such as the TDK or Sony brands. So far, I've burned two movies with TDK and have had smooth playback on both.

I had exactly the same problem and in my case it turned out to be a region problem even though in shrink/dvd decrypter/smart ripper or what ever software i tried it wouldnt play back in my tosh even when i had multiregion ticked or region 2. Tried same disks in a friends multiregion standalone and played with no probs.
My advise if you havent tried is to back up a region 2 disk on a ritek dvd-r and it works ever time now in my tosh sd210e

had the similar problem - experiencing pixellation in set top boxes during the final chapters of the DVD. Am using Imation DVD-R's. They startup and play beautifully end to end in my PC, but in the settop will pixellate only near the end of the movie. If media is media, why would the end of the movie be any harder to read than the first 3/4 of it?

    1. Burning DVDs is a fairly sensitive thing and it varies between person to person. The best advice I can give is to burn slow and use reliable media (experience and feedback from others will let you in on that)

    2. Playback on non-PC platforms is never guranteed. Hence people have issues playing VCD/SVCD/DVDs on standalones all the time. Most of the time it is because (a) the player doesnt support that functionality (b) the player doesnt support the media or (c) the disc was burned too fast etc.
