I'm planning to buy a Playstation 3, but I don't know what I have to have to play this system.

I've heard that to play this form of system I have to have HD television. Is that correct, or wrong. The television set I'm using is a 24-inch sanyo flat-panel.

I know this question might seem dumb, but I need to know before I pay $456 or $500 for this system!

    Thanks,

    :p Are you serious?

You can play it on any TV, it would hurt sales if was only on HD...

You dont have to have anything to actually play a PS3, except PS3 and a TV, but honestly if ANY person is going to purchase a PS3, a must is an HD Tv. No offense to anyone with a Non HD tv or a small HD tv, but really if your going to buy a PS3 and play it on a small flat screen then your better off buying a PS2. In my opinion its pointless to even own a PS3 if you dont have an HD TV atleast 42" and up. Its funny bc Ive been to alot of "customers" homes and out of all the people with PS3's half are playing them on small NON HD tv's under 32" mare playing them on those hudge 50+ Projection TV's. Just because it has RED,GREEN,BLUE component plugs doesnt mean its HD. They usally call them Color Stream.

I have a 37 inch and it works just fine. He is right though, if you get a PS3 then consider making your next investment a HD tv or monitor.

Thats the next thing on my list, a 1080p 22" monitor, can't beat that for 200 bucks.

But yeah I'd definitely look into getting a HD set or a wide screen monitor like me in the near future for the ps3. The difference is amazing in game play, consider it like adding extra value to all your games.

Just make sure the tv/monitor you get is hdcp or else you will be up s*** creek without a paddle.

I have a 65" dlp now but I started on a 720p 32 " and it was great now the 65" is way better but you can do it on any tv just 25" or smaller would be silly now. you will get the most out of it on a 40" or bigger 1080p tv though.

I would understand why you would want an HDTV as a must for the PS3, but 42" or higher? I'm still stuck with a 28" SDTV and I'm not complaining. I've seen my PS3 on a 52" HDTV and there is a HUGE difference, but it's not something I'd care too much about.

And I'm getting a 19" Samsung monitor since I'm still using a CRT on my computer. It accepts HDCP connection through DVI-D so I'll be connecting my PS3 through that at 720p considering how small the text would be at 1080p. I've already seen the quality on it and it's great. Unless someone can point me to a 22" LCD that's $200 CDN or less.

    When I got my PS3 I also got GTA4.

We have a 32" HDTV, but I didnt have a HDMI cable at first. So I had to use the scart socket (RGB). Even like this I had trouble reading the names of the other players in-game, they were too pixelated.

I then bought a v1.3 HDMI cable, and everything became crystal clear! (Dont buy a HDMI cable that is less than a v1.3 as they have lower transfer speeds)

So yes you can play it on any TV via scart but then the image quality will be reduced. As people have said if you buy a HD console the enxt thing you need on your shopping list would be a HD TV

Play it however you wish thats all i will say wheter it be 480i, or 1080p.
JBhfit i must disagree with you, there is nothing wrong with playing a ps3 on a screen under 42" and if it is like 3X" there is nothing wrong with 720p seeing as though 85% of ps3 games run only at 720p.
Recomending a Ps2 over a Ps3 you must be joking right?, even if you have a CRT you will see a clear difference between a Ps2 and a Ps3 more then that difference you say between 480i and 1080p is because you are talking about the resolution which is what 5% of the 7th gen, the other 95% of improvements are other things like lighting (HDR etc), more detailed characters and models, full Dolby Digital 5.1 during gameplay. You also do realise that 1080p has got its limits too, if you run it on a huge TV as you say you will get worse quality then running it at 720p on a 22" screen. You really havent thought out your post have you?
BTW, PS2 already did do 1080i not p but i similar anyways, so i hope you do think differently about the improvements, so you dont come back saying What game did 1080 on ps2!?, it was Gran turismo 4 and tourist trophy the two best looking ps2 games, this goes to show it wasnt the resolution jump it was actually a jump in polygons and detail.

    Component cables produce HD pictures.

Anyway, for the original poster, no, you don't need an HDTV to enjoy the PS3 but if you wanna experience the full potential of the PS3, HD is the way to go.

When I first bought the PS3 on launch day, I had a 27" CRT. I still enjoyed the hell outta my PS3.

Then I upgraded to a 32" HDTV in my bedroom and instantly noticed the difference.

You won't be sorry if you decide to hold out on purchasing a PS3 until you get an HDTV--but you don't need that HDTV.

PS My brother wound up purchasing a 52" 1080p TV for the living room and it really is amazing how great the picture is (from 27" CRT > 32" HDTV > 52" HDTV).

This has been good help, I'm thinking about just buying a Playstation 3 first, because right know I don't have a job. But, In a few week I'm starting college and I will probably get a job. this will help me buy more stuff.

    Thank you,
