I've been recording stuff off TV with the Sony DVD-R. Now I notice they come in two different types: 1x-8x and 1x-16x. But they are the same price. Why is that? What is the difference?

The 16x dvd's will burn media faster if you set it to 16x(simply means 16 times faster or twice as fast as 8x). After reading through other forums I'd recommend burning at 8x it is pretty much the standard for safer burning. Also your cd/dvd burner has to be compatible with a 16x dvd's to work.

I would recommend you slow your burn to 4x and make sure you use good quality media such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, stay away from Memorex or any CMC mag made discs

Thank you for the quick response. It turns out my machine is not compatible with the 16x.
