Ok, I've been having burning issues since late july. I got my laptop back in Feb 06, and started using memorex CD-Rs. I never had any problems with any of the disks. I ran out of those, and tried using verbatim, dynex(bad choice), and just a few days ago, Fuji CD-Rs that I made sure were made in Japan, but they all don't work for me. What happens is, I'm backing up music on these cd-rs, the burning goes fine, until about the last song, then an error message or illegal disk message pops up. I put the cd in my car, and all the songs play except for half of the last song.

I have posted 2 threads about my problem, uninstalled nero, used the clean tool, tried using other programs, reinstalled nero, uninstalled it again, cleaned again, got nero 7, and it still wont work. Although last night after I reinstalled nero, I actually got one cd burned without any errors. I tried again this morning, and tonight with no luck. I also tried burning just 4 songs onto a cd, and that worked! Also, another thing, I burned a comilation cd with about 20 songs, 78 minutes of music, and that failed after it was about 70% completed. I dont know if that helps at all. I dont have roxio or anything. I do have sonic, and I thought I read somewhere that that could affect nero, but I never had any problems until 2 months ago. I also have lightscribe if that matters. I have been getting lightscribe errors recently when my laptop boots up.

Sorry about the long explanation, but I just wanted to make sure you guys were up to speed with all this crap.

    Hi GodWTF
Don't see to much wrong here - except of course that the burn fails at the end.
Take a song or 2 off so that your not burning to the edge like you are now - see if that helps.

Sonic (roxio) doesn't always conflict - you can tell if there is a conflict in the log - there will be a driver listed under 'existing drivers' like this Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS. Yours doesn't have that.
I have Sonic and Nero on my laptop - no problems w/ either.
Have you tried burning cd's w/ Sonic?

Are you up to date on the updates for the laptop?

I have tried burning the cds with every program on my computer. Nero, Sonic, Windows Media Player, Itunes, everything pretty much, and the same thing happened every time. I'm not too sure about the updates on my laptop. How would I find that out, and how would I get the latest update? I thought my computer did that automatically.

I'm thinking maybe of just buying the memorex cds I used all along and seeing if it will work.

The updates can happen automatically but will usually prompt you 1st if you want to check or download an update (check your setting).
Like for my HP I have 'HP update' set to check 1x a month and notify me b/4 checking.

Some manufactures have a diagnostic tool on their website you can check the laptop w/ to make sure all devices are working. How good it is well that's a good question. Haven't really had any problems with mine to check the reliability of this.
Since your also having lightscribe errors may want to check for any updates and run a diagnostic test if the manufacturer has one.

Take a song or 2 off and see if that does it. Taiyo cd's are very good in my experience- I've used them for years w/o a hitch.

Ok, I bought the same exact memorex cds that I had been using for months, I ran a full diagnostic test, I found my computer's factory cd with a whole bunch of drivers on it and reinstalled pretty much everything, and it still wont work. I couldnt find a lightscribe diagnostic check though. I give up, I cant figure out what the hell is wrong with my cd-rom. I might bring it into a shop or something.

Nah not the shop - since you bought the laptop in Feb 06 this drive should still be under warranty. I would call tech support and see about getting a replacement.
You ruled out numerous things and have used several brands of cd - sounds more like the drive itself.

Yea, I guess I'll call tech support, but what should I say? My burner isnt working, can you send me a new one? Will they just send me a new drive that easily, or do I have to send my computer back to them.

Yep - my burner is no longer burning cd's & I'm not happy (nicely of course). Then tell them what you've tried - different programs, media etc.
They may have another solution for you or they also may have had others call in with the same complaint.
Depends on who the manufacturer is on how they handle it. May have a repair place nearby you can go to.
I would use that warranty to the fullest. No use you paying for something still covered.

Other suggestions to try 1st - if you haven't been running virus & spyware scans do those 1st. Also a disc cleanup and system defrag.

    Definitely keep us posted.

How do I do a disk cleanup and system defrag? What would that do? Also, I actually didnt uninstall and reinstall my cd/dvd rom driver. Once I uninstall it, how do I reinstall it again? I'm worried that I will make a mistake and wont be able to. Also, I have norton anti virus, that scans my computer every week. This week it found nothing. I also have ewido anti-spyware that I scan my computer with every week also. Now, a couple months ago, it found a virus and put it in quarantine. Do you want the name of the virus? Would that be of any help? Also, when I burned with Sonic a couple days ago, it actually started giving me error messages after the burn failed. I wrote them down and will post them later today. I hope that helps as well.

Disc cleanup and a system defrag - you can use windows utilities to do them. Go to start> all programs>accessories>system tools.

Will they help this problem - probably not - but best to keep the pc running smooth. Run them weekly too.

Disc cleanup cleans up unnesscary files like temp files. System defrag defragments your hard to run smoother. Depending on how much drive space is used and how fragmented the hard drive is may take a awhile. Need 15-20% free disc space to run.

What are the error messages Sonic gave after the burned failed? Might be helpful.
