hi, i've already posted a thread but i think it got burried =( i'm in desperate need of help! here's my situation: i have plenty of movies in avi. format that i've downloaded off the net. now before, my nero 5 used to burn these movies no problem with both sound and picture. i didn't have to use any other program to convert the avi. to mpeg because nero automatically encoded the file before burning. but then recently, it won't burn at all!!! i'll wait like an hour and a half for the encoding and burning to finish, and when i play back the cd all thats on it are these files with no indication of sound, picture, no movie whatsoever.
when i try to preview the movie in nero beforehand, i get picture now but no sound. i've downloaded a shit load of codecs (divx 3 and 5, ac3 filter, and ffdshow although i don't know what the heck to do with that) and i still get no sound. in contrast, the movies play fine on my divx player. its just damn nero!!!!
pleeeeeeeease help me. i tried converting the avi. files using TMPGNce but the picture had no sound plus, it came out a different size and the quality was worse.
i'd much rather just stick with nero's encoding. pleeeeeeeeease help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! =(

To fix the picture size problem if you are using the project wizzard:

-In the 3rd or 4th step at the bottom right hit "Other Setting"

-In the "Advanced" tab go down about 1/4 of th way, under "Video arrange Method" select the first "Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio.)

That solves the video problem, I'd assume the audio could be fixed if you use another audio source than the AVI. To do that:

    -Open you video he VirtualDub

-Go to "Audio" -> "Full Compression Mode"

-Go to "Audio" -> "Compression" -> "No Compression PCM"

-Go to "File" -> "Save WAV"

That should take care of the lack of audio, and hopefully any possibility of audio and video being out of sync. :) All of this was from memory, so I might be off by a few words or two. :p

    hi thanks for replyin
ok i did everything you said except that when i try to save it in virtual dub it says "no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format." do i need some specific codec? and if this is done, will i finally be able to get sound in nero or tmpgenc?

    hello again
ok i tried using another program to get audio and now i can use tmpgenc just fine (although the picture quality gets a little worse). now my final problem... after i converted the avi file to mpeg using tmpgenc, i then upload it into nero so that i could burn. after this is done at 8x speed, i play back the cd and still no damn movie!!! all thats on the cd are 5 folders (cd1, ext, mpegav, segment, vcd). why doesn't my movie burn?? i've wasted so many cds =(

Unless you are on a MAC WAV should be supported, WAV is windows audio. :( You can get GSpot to see what codecs you have and/or need for the specific video.

You will lose quality no matter what you do. :p

Have you tried playing the DVDs in your PC? What settings are you using in TMPGEnc? What audio format does GSpot show when you open the AVI?

hello again ^_^ ok in gspot it says that the codecs are installed for both audio and video (DivX 3 Low-Motion, 0x2000(AC3, Dolby Laboratories, Inc) AC3). as for tmpgenc, i select video-cd NTSC. didn't change much else except for what you suggested. whats the reason why the mpeg output file isn't burning on to my cd-rs? i'm using nero 5.

no i got my avi. files to convert into mpeg just fine. everythings fine.. the audio comes out and everything. now i'm just having problems with burning it on to the cd-r.
i'll open nero, drag over the new mpeg file, even preview it, and then when i go to burn it (speed of 8x) and then play the cd back, theres no movie. thats my big fat problem now >=/ lol

Does the movie play fine in Nero's preview? Have you tried another burning program? If so and it still fails it sounds like a hardware problem. :(

Edit: Have you tried to burn anything else lately to see if your burner is working fine?

Are you burning it as a VCD or SVCD? I assume so, there is no point burning as a Data CD or you may as well just stick the original DivX on CD.

Now I will also assume that you are trying to play back on a DVD player, once again you can play the DivX on the PC so it would be a waste of CD.

Did you make sure then that you are converting it to VCD/SVCD and that you are using the correct option in Nero.

It's just you say that the resulting file has video/sound, but then isn't there after burning? First thing that comes to mind is that you burned a converted DivX to MPEG to a CD as a data CD and the format isn't supprted by your DVD?

    hi buxton ^_^
what i'm trying to do is burn my downloaded movies on to a cd-r so that they don't take up so much room on my computer (and so i can download other movies). it's wierd because before when i would drag an avi file into nero, it would encode, burn and then play back. but now it won't burn at all. a movie that is... all that burns are 5 folders but no movie.
i have both nero 5 and 6.. in nero 5 i use data cd. in nero 6 i used video cd.. but both didn't work. when i transfer the avi file direct in nero, they preview only has picture. but when i convert avi to mpeg using tmpgenc, nero previews it. but still won't burn...
i would like the finalized cd-r to play on both pc and dvd player. am i confusing you? i have no idea what to do.
main thing.. i would ultimately like to use nero to burn. i mean it already encodes automatically...
i have a few movies that my cousin burned on this computer that burned as in avi. file and plays fine with the same quality picture and sound. thats what i want to achieve. thanks in advance.

Well I don't use Nero to convert the file, but, I think you need an MPEG2 Plugin for that to work. Doing a search on the net I don't think it is a free download, you havt to buy it, doesn't look like Nero6 has this built in. So first thing is do you have this plugin and is it installed?

Best thing is to convert your .AVI to MPEG2 and MP2 (Video and Audio) in TmpgEnc. Use the Wizard, it's not that hard to fathom it out. Make sure you find out if the .AVI is PAL or NTSC and set the first page to the relevant format ie VCD PAL/NTSC.

Then in Nero6 choose VCD and just drop the converted file into the window on the left side.

If that fails it sounds like there is maybe a software issue somewere.

In XP/2000 you can right click the file - then look at the summary.

25 Frames Per Second is PAL
23/29 Frames Per Second is NTSC - I think one is TV and one is Video. Or use G-Spot (Worst prog to ever reccomend to a female) that will tell you the frame rate.

MPEG/MPEG2 I will take a guess that they are the same basic thing only MPEG2 offers more compression/better quality? Is that not why DVD took a while to appear? MPEG didn't offer good enough compression?
