My computer just stopped reading DVD's. I have both an internal and external drive and it was working fine until I tried to copy a movie the other day. I do not use Nero and I tried to uninstall and reinstall my drives and its still not working. Please help me.

    Hi nekosan
Did it stop reading burned dvd's, original dvd's or doesn't see a blank on the drive?
Both drives do the same thing?

Which movie are you trying to do? What programs have you tried?
    Anything change pc wise?

Sorry for the questions but more info is better.

Ok, Neither of my drives are able to read any type of DVD's now. Here is what happened. I was using DVD Fabexpress, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter to burn all my DVD's. I tried a new movie I bought and I could not get it to go past 51% in FabExpress. Someone mentioned I wanted to update my software, so I decided to try the new version DVD Fab, but I still could not get it to go past 51%. So then I tried Ripit4me and it kept saying there was a bad section on the DVD and try cleaning it. So I gave up on that disc and got two more... I tried one and again could not get past 51%. Then all the sudden, both of my DVD drives stopped reading any type of DVD (Burned, Normal, Blank). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still will not work.

    Ok nekosan lets try this,

    1) Un-install all of your DVD/CD authoring software and I mean everything! especially Nero or Roxio

    2) un-install both drives. Under "device Manager"

    3) This one is important "Re-Start your computer" and let windows re-install your drives.

    4) Now see if your drives will at least recognize a DVD.

    5) if that was sucessfull then go ahead and load some software you plan on backing up your DVD's with. I would recommend going with DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and RipIt4Me. Here are a couple of guides for doing this
    Installing RipIt4Me with FixVTS
    Using RipIt4Me

    Hope this helps

I uninstalled everything else and uninstalled both of my drives and it still does not work. when I put a DVD into my external drive under my computer is goes from a DVD RW to a CD drive. That's ok - the drive showing as cd drive when a disc is inserted. Normal for Windows.

How about the internal drive - still unable to read anything?

Do you have another pc or laptop you can hook this external up too and see if it works in another pc/laptop?

MacAfee shouldn't be causing a problem. I have in one 1 pc I use to burn and so far ok. To rule it out though you can turn off McAfee (disconnect from the internet 1st) and see if it makes a diff.

Another thing you might try is a system restore to an earlier date
when everything was working. It may or may not help, but it won't
hurt anything because you can undo a system restore.
Also my system did that once last year. It was really weird,
but one of the programs wrote a duplicate file to my documents
folder that I wasn't aware of. So you might want to check
around and see if there is a copy of a file that you thought
you deleted. Sometimes it can be the tiniest little thing
that will give you another gray hair :) Hang in there. There
are some really savy guys and gals on this site. I'm sure
    somebody will figure this out.

Another thing you may want to do before trying Shardel's suggestion
    is virus and spyware scans.
Make sure your pc is clean.
Run a scan w/ your current anitvirus software and see what it finds.

I'd also suggest running an online scan by trendmicro next. Free and does a great job finding and removing stuff - housecall link.

Can the external connect by usb too? If it does try it with your laptop.
