No, I dont thiink its possible to play any kind of homebrew on fw 2.71 i suggest selling it and buying a 1.5,2.5 or 2.6 off ebay.
U better not try to install the UP urself or else 99% chacnces r there that u may fry ur mobo get it installed profesionally bcuz there are 21 wires to solder and 1 wire is 1mm!
Yeah I wouldn't wanna try it myself. You can get the modchip for £54 from modchip-store.co.uk, apparently they have some on stock. Don't know how much a professional would charge to install it though.
@dinner u better wait till the downgrade comes out and then u have to many sorts of stuff like installin in devhook and all tht stuff which is not tht easy.ya and by the way if u want to v1.5 then u have to install the modchip in ur pspppppp .......lol
And what if a downgrader doesn't come out??? I would suggest waiting a few months to see if there are any developments with a downgrader, then if theres not, and you have the cash, try the modchip.
Just sell it on ebay and buy another one with lower fw. Or if you only just bought it, take it back to the store and say it wasn't what you wanted and then buy one off amazon or ebay.

No sorry, 2.6 is currently the highest firmware that you can run the nintendo etc emulators on. You should try to swap your psp with your friend, then you could downgrade to 1.5. Just give him a little extra cash or something. Or you could scratch the faceplate on his psp "accidentally" and then offer to swap his psp for yours, then just go buy a new faceplate.
