I want to buy a sony divx player and was wondering about avi's.I usually download these and convert them to vob so I can play them on my regular player. Will I lose quality by doing this or will just keeping the avi file as data and play it on the divx player be better quality. Also i've heard you can burn up tp 6 700mb movies on a dvd which will save me money on media. Thanks

Why would you even think about converting to VOB anymore? That's why you buy a Divx player, so you don't have to convert.
Burn the AVI videos as data to a disc(if it has USB playback, use a USB stick) and watch them.
And yes, converting to DVD(VOB) will cause quality loss, so you will be avoiding that once you have the Divx player.

Make sure you check some reviews for the Sony. The bulk of the downloads out there are Xvid.

I think if it says that it plays Divx, will most likely work with Xvid...of course will always be some "special" players. I think most of the times is not that the player doesn't support Xvid, but files won't play because the resolution is too high or there is packed bitrate issues and such- basically user error.

QPel enabled encodes can also cause problems.
