Try using better media, like sony, tdk, fuji, verbatim DVD-R or DVD+R. Don't use memorex or other cheap brands, seems to give me problems with skipping too. If you currently use DVD-R, try out some DVD+R instead and vice versa. Your portable dvd player might have better compatibilty with it instead. And what kind of software are you using to burn movies??

Hey, try burning at 4x instead of something faster. Also, if it skips with every dvd that you use on it, bring it back or use the warranty on it. (Hopefully you have one!) Anyways, it might be just a bad burner. (However, those cases are rare)

Does the backup play ok on the drive you burned it with? Does it play ok in other set-top players? What brand and format are your discs? What is the media code? Use this free utility to determine media code. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ What speed did you burn at? What software did you use? What make and model dvdrw do you have? Might be able to booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom for better compatability. As you can see we need a lot more information. My guess is it's a media problem.

What type of blank dvd-r/+r media you're using and what's the speed you're burning? Sounds like crap media issue to me. Perhaps you might want to consider some of these highly quality media such as Fuji, TY, Maxell, Verbatim, Sony and TDK.
