I recently purchased an external memorex 16x double layer recorder (3202 3288). I am using the included nero 6 software that was included with the burner. I am using the trial version of anydvd as the decrypter. I am using memorex dvd+r's as blank media. I have had very little luck burning. The burning process compresses and fits on the disk, then it burns it and says its successful...but I go to play it on my home dvd player and it is really choppy, pixilated, or freezes all together. It's very frustrating - I've had a lot of coasters. At first I was thinking about buying dual layer disks, thinking maybe it is compressing the quality too much. I'm not sure if the expense is worth it. Then I got to reading around and found that the general consensus is that memorex isn't very well liked around here and that the blank media makes a big difference. So any advice about what I am doing wrong, if i should use dual layer, or if it's the blank medias fault would be greatly appreciated.
First thing I would suggest is to get rid of the Memo-Sux Discs. Download this DVD Identifier to see for sure WHO manufactured the Disc you have: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Then check out this site to confirm that they are good or bad: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
what you are going through is definately bad media....... if you can't read or understand what 2oldgeek has advised you to do..... then here is the short version...... buy Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Sony, to mention a few great DVD media and you won't have to go through what you are going through!
Memorex isn't very well liked because it is very hard to find the good ones from the bad one. They will throw in some ricohs,mitsubishi,maybe even ritek,but the chance of getting cmags are likely. Cmags are on the majority of memosux media.They are a lower quality manufacture. Here's few things to try until we get the exact MID code on your media: Slow down the burn speed. Reduce backup target to 4300 mbs. When the choppiness/pixellation and freezing take place: Not where those issues occur. Now view them on your pc using that memorex burner to play them. See how they look,those areas at issue. Also test them in other drives. PC/Stand alone players/game consoles and see how they react. The more drives,the better. Stand alones do have a harder time with dvd backups.Your pc should be able to play it's own backups and they should look near original. What's your compressing program? You stated: Nero6: Burn program,and an excellent one.Won't pull off encryption and won't compress unless it's nero recode2. Anydvd: Background ripper,helps nero pull off the encryption.Also makes your drive region free. Compression: ? Dvd shrink is a very good,free ripping and compressing program.You can even set it up for nero to autoburn. Please explain your process! There's a whole lot of things that can cause those issues: Poor quality media Too fast burn speed Burning too much-burning to the very outer edge of disc Multi-tasking Paper/sticker labels Fragmented Harddrive Too much compression Spyware/malware Poor quality burner Stand alone player: Dirty lens/worn out drive Firmware update And the list goes on. Get some rw discs until you get those issues solved. They're great to practice with,but stand alone players may have trouble with them as well. Hold off on the Dual layer till you can get single layer mastered.$2-$3 coasters! Ouch!
OK...Here's what I've found out. The memorex disks I've been using are CMC MAG, which I found out are 4th class media. So, Im guessing that's the problem. 0-50% success rate doesn't sound very promising. I'm using Nero Recode 2 to compress and burn. I've been running advanced analysis and using slow burn; both of which are supposed to improve quality. I've tried DVDShrink, with the same results. I usually set my computer to burn and then leave for awhile, so multi-tasking shouldn't be an issue. No labels. I couldn't tell you about a fragmented hard-drive. I leave the compression up to Nero. I have a good up-to-date spyware program. My burner is brand new. My stand-alone player has never had any other problems. **So I'm guessing probably bad media. Any more suggestions/feedback is more than welcome. You guys have already taught me double what I already knew. Thanks! **So I should go with Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, or Sony?
To re-emphasize saugmons comment. Set the target size to 4300, this will keep the burns from being too close to the edge of the media. While waiting for your new media, try the suggestions on the cmc mags and see if you can get a working burn. Better to get the system down with crap media than still struggle when your new media comes in. There are a couple of excellent guides in my signature for DVDShrink and dvddecrypter. even try useing the main app from the nero website as OEM discs that are thrown in with burners are old and not as good generally as a full standalone upto date software...
Thanks everybody! I'm gonna try to get a hold of some verbatim disks and use those. I'll keep the burn speed down and see how that works.
