I'm not aware (and can't find) any mention of a scheduled vista update release.

This could be malware exploiting the M$ update procedure.. Don't know and don't really care as it just proves once again that vista is a hopeless POS made by an inept and greedy business.

Yeah.. You own this vista so you are entitled to support from M$

It's a new fault to me, and I must see 20 messed up vista machines a week now, but not with a failed update problem.

Did this machine come with norton internet (in)security installed? It may be that blocking M$ updates because it's IMHO overly paranoid. There should be a way to whitelist M$ updates so they work.. I don't se why they should fail anyway unless M$ have a server problem or your firewall has blocked some core component.

Sorry you don't like my professional opinion of vista, the only way people can hope to get M$ to drop this lemon and release something that works is by refusing to buy it and complaining every time it gets in the way or breaks.. It worked with ME and will work again..

I would still run anti virus/anti spyware apps as a general precaution, just to be sure some nasty hasn't installed itself and is trying to download more of it's friends.

"Having failed 3 times to install KB938371 I succesfully did the
    following
Go to 'Download details: Update for Windows Vista (KB938371)'
    Download standalones KB937267-x86.msu and KB938371-x86.msu
Disable UAC, Anti-virus, Windows firewall and disconnect from internet
Install KB937267 (no reboot required) then KB938371 reboot and it
