Hello, I am new to these forums and figured I would give it a shot as I was reading through them when I stumbled across this forum searching google for a problem I was having.

My cd/dvd-rom drive stopped reading blank rewritable media. I thought it was a hardware issue, so I RMA'ed the drive and recieved a replacement. I am still having the same problem so now I believe it to be an OS problem. There may be some drivers I am missing? or perhaps the registry got messed up somehow?

Anyway, it has no problem reading cds or dvds that contain data, even previously burned cds or dvds. It just does not read blank discs anymore, and I've been searching for days on information on how I could fix this problem.

    The drive is:
    Brand SAMSUNG
    Type DVD Burner
    Model SH-S203N
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151154

It was working fine when I first put the pc together, and now it is doing this to me. If anyone has any ideas how I might go about fixing this, I would greatly appreciate any help.

It could be junk media. What brand/type is it, and have you tried a different brand?

Hey GrandpaBW, I've tried HP dvd+r rws, Fujifilm cd-rs, and Memorex cd-rs. They all used to work fine, and lately they haven't worked at all. It doesnt read blank discs but it reads previously written discs of the same type. It just seems to not recognize blank discs at all.

    Hi :)
Not sure what you mean by my drive doesn't read blanks anymore.
    Whats to read? ;)
BTW A lot of folk get problems with RW media because of bitsetting to DVD-ROM.
If you have this setting, change it.
    It may help.

It reads all discs, dvds, cds, whatever, as long as there is something on the cd or dvd. If the cd or dvd is blank, and writable, it does not detect the cd or dvd anymore. It used to have no problem finding blank cds and showing 700mb free on the disc, now it doesnt even detect a disc has been inserted if it is blank. And I dont see any bitsettings on this drive, or where to change it.

    Edit:
I tried this ImgBurn program you talked of. It was able to burn a file to a blank cd, I put an mp3 on it. After it did that, windows detected and showed the cd in the drive. as 0 free space, 4.46mb total. When the cd or dvd is blank, it doesnt show anything for free/used, like I had not even put a disc in there in the first place. It just changes from Dvd-rom to CD Drive (D:).

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could fix this? I've tried removing my upper and lowerfilters.
