    hi
i want to put my computer in stand by, i know how to do it, and still stay connected to the internet, so that my torrents can continue downloading at the moment it just disconnects me and then goes intop standby all my friends can continue downloading when their comps are in stnd by, but mine doesnt, my modem swithes off, meaning the lights go off, i have a sagem f@st 800-840 dsl modem, and it connects to the comp via usb. and to the phone line via a RJ11 data cable, it has no other things powering it apart from the usb.
    can someone please help me?
all help is greatly apprecieated thanks alot in advance.

If you havent got a "Always on" connection it will disconnect itself when you stand by/Hibernate I think, I'll assume you have to dail up to access the net, right?

If so then you can't do what your looking to do, you need a to get somthing like a cable modem thats running 24/7.

your ISP may ber booting you off after a certain amount of time. As to USB modems, (especially the Sagem 'modem' as i have the misfortune to have one) they are not all very good. My sagem disconnects frequently at random times, put me off downloading for good. You should consider buying a router, at the very least the router can be left on independently from the PC.

My provider gave me one of them Sagem pieces of cr@p too creaky, i feel your pain...
Then again, i had the chance to get me a motorola modem and haven't looked back since.

@Blueray : the problem is your modem, as it powers off when your comp goes to standby.
Try getting anohter modem that works on an independent power supply, that should fix it.

you know that thought came to mind the one with independent powers suply.
will netgear be a good choice it comes with a power adapter and stuff.
as for that crappy old sagem modem it is a insult to broadband.
frequent disconnections and it gets hot realy quickly and then flops.

Your very much welcome BluRay my friend, sorry I would'nt of said anything everything was just loading so slow with your big sig and a tonne of my band width being eaten by uTorrent ;)

Heres how big it should be:

    Your sig was 660px x 440px and 73.59kb

    Was kinda nice though :) - http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i176/BluRay_2006/BluRayAfterDawnImagesignature.gif

    I see, understood Mr.Fiend :p

Between me and you it would be fun to see you as a mod for a day or two *read's The_Fiend's sig*

"If I see one more n00b qeustion I'm killing you all!"

Haha, would be funny stuff :)

Staying on track, yeh a router would be one way round it, its reccomended anyway so it can't hurt ;)

thnx for all the info guys.
but i realy dont wanna get a router.
number one i am guessing it is expensive.
number two i realy wanna invest in a MODEM rather than a router.
maybe my conception of router is wrong!
is a router a wireless device that works just like a modem except it is wireless?
i bet Mr.Fiend would definetly kill me for that nooby question.
so anyway hows my new sig? ray! does it fit in with the rules?

/me stabs Bluray in the eyes for being a n00b

Now, to answer that question, as i am in a rather good mood today...
    A router is a device that :
    A) works like a hardware firewall due to it's NAT *Network Adress Translation* and
    B) lets you connect several computers together.
Routers CAN be wireless, but normal routers have wires running between them.

Webopedia's take on what a router is :
Now, on to the netgear modem..
It has it's ups and downs, i had one a while back, but sold it because it got pretty hot and took ages to cool down.
I personally prefer Motorola modems *even the ones with the built in routers*, but they are quite expensive.
You could also have a look at Linksys or Sweex stuff, pretty sure both brands have modems, both wired and wireless.

you know i may go a little off track here, but i'd rather do that then open up a whole new thread, and pollute the forum room.
everyone seems to think Utorrent and ABC and azerus are good clients.
i personaly prefer BitTorando and Bicomet, even though bitcomet has a bad reputation.
but i dont like azerus that much.
and utorrent seems to take forever to download, whereas utorrent dosent even start to download.
