hey guys, i'm desperately in need of help. here's the story: i was installing a game on my computer. after i install it, i tried to play the game. but my computer froze. so i did the ctrl alt delete thing. then i ended the program, but i saw that the cpu usage is still high so i went to the processes tab and accidently ended something that starts with an 'exxxxxx' after that, almost all of my icons didn't have it's original picture. for example, winamp is a lightening bolt, but now and most of the other icons have another icon pic like a piece of paper with a small window in the middle. i know it's hard to imagine, you know when windows can't recongnise a program/file it has 'that' icon? so i freaked out not knowing what to do. so i just restart my computer. and weird stuff just popped up. like when i clicked my IE icon, it pops a message saying : Windows cannot open this file: file: Internet Explorer.lnk and the 2 options of whether to search it on the web or choose from the list. and now i can't even open my IE window. i know you're thinking then how can i type to you. well i just picked the search for it in the web option and cried out here for help!! please help me... i'm just so depress right now. i even tried the system restore thing but when i typed :C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe in the run bar, it pops up the same window. even my icons beside my clock is gone! please please please help me... would be GREATLY apprieciated hakuron ps. does this means i have to erase everthing?! please not...
Let me guess.. You downloaded the game illegally right? And your pc was to slow for the game? It also happened to my once. I just unisntalled the game and the problem was solved. Cheers
yea but i can't even get to the add/remove program window. i clicked on the icon and nothing popped up. but the mouse icon in the control panel worked. i even tried the uninstalling that game icon, but it has the same pop up window asking me to choose those two options. thanks for replying me hakuron
hi im not sure if this would work but try doing a 'system restore' it restores your computer and all its files to an earlier date. so do a system restore to a date before you insatlled the game. go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore and then follow the on screen steps and pick an earlier date....hope this helped bye
thanks touran, but as i mentioned earlier, when i click on the system restore icon, i got a pop up window saying: Windows cannot open this file: File: System Restore .lnk and i have to pick either let window go on web and find the appropriate program or select the program from a list. much appreciated hakuron

well i finally manage to uninstall the game. and i even used system restore to reset my computer to an earlier date. for a few minutes, the icons are back. but i can't click on them though. then after a few more minutes my icons still have that unknown file pic. so the same .lnk extention appeared. please help me. i know i'm hopless right now... please tell me what to do next. btw, u know the blue screen when we log on to windows, and u have to type a password to log in? well an additional window popped up with weird symbols. and i have to click 'ok' or 'close' to get pass that am i dead meat? hakuron
listen doenload hijackthis and run a scan and then post it to the virus section and wait for further instructions it might be a virus...you neva know
