After 1½ faithful years, I have decided to replace my Ricoh burner. I want a multipurpose drive that won't PO the Mrs with it's price. I have found a Plextor PX-740A for $84 ... Anyone have any opinions or experience with this unit?

    catfreak,
The PX-716A list price is $130.00 and the PX-740A list price is $109.00, The PX-740A has a faster DVD-R DL write speed, 8X. Your purchase price is $84.00 and you get Plextor quality. Sounds like a great buy to me. If you buy the PX-740A remember to install the PlexTools and select Speed Read and Change Booktype -R to ROM.

I bought one, installed plextools...but the booktype option...is not possible..maybe because the plextor 740 is a benq 1640...

When you open PlexTools Professional: 1.) Highlighted the PX-740A drive in the upper left corner 2.) Slide down and highlight Drive Settings on the left side 3.) On right select the Advanced tab 4.)The Change Book Type check boxes should be at the bottom; I would recommend that you check both boxes, DVD+R and DVD+R DL.

I do not have PlexTools Professional XL but I believe the sequence is 1.)Highlight the drive in the Device Window 2.)Click on the + box next to Drive Settings in the Function Window on the left 3.) Highlight Advanced 4.) In the right side window you should see a series of check boxes, I would hope you would see the Change Book Type check boxes there.

If you do not see the above you may not have the latest version of PlexTools Pro, I would go to www.plextor.com and upgrade my PlexTools Pro to the current version 2.23.

I know what you mean. With the drive came a cd-rom with PlexTools Professional and a 30 days evaluate version of PlexTools Professional XL
With profesional where you guided me too i can only change 3 check boxes which are from top to the bottom Enable Auto Insert Notification, Enable Buffer Underrun Proof and Enable DMA.
7 other check boxes are faded so i can't do anything with it.
My message was just a warning one for all those people who want to buy a px-740a..It isn't a real plextor. It is a Benq, thats probably the reason why you can't use all the options of plextools.
But it is still possible to change the booktype. You can do it with QSuite a tool you can download from the benq site or with Nero cd/dvd speed.
So afterall...i'm still happy with this drive. Anyway thanks for your quick response....
ps..sorry for my lousy englisch...i'm a dutch guy

That explains why the list price is so inexpensive, $109.00.

I am sorry you can not get PlexTools to control your drive as much as I can. I hope you have the VariRec tab to increase the percentage of the burn, I increase by 4% to the plus side and lock the burn speed down to 4X for greater compatibility with my movie backups.

Also, I use the Spelling and Grammar checker in MS Word on all my postings before I reply. I am an over educated American and my spelling and grammar are really bad; I would hate to think how much worse it would be in another language!

Nope no changes are possible....only info.
My whole computer went down so i had to buy a new one and i wanted a plextor because they are the best, at least thats wat i have been reading. I wanted the sata version...but that made the package too expensive..then the news came that there was going to be a cheaper one..so i orderded one..and in the meantime i searched on the net for info..Damn it was a benq:(
but the reviews where good..So it is a cheap plextor and the only thing you can do with it is read and burn, which does it reel good...but no extra tools as varirec etc. But i can say i have a plextor:) And i bought it for 79,- Euro

don't worry too much, Er1k...changing your booktype really isn't important or necessary anymore.
