Ok, I have done everything I needed to do in order to get the green triangle. It was green for a few days, but now I can't get it back. I have tried the port forwarding and also the Upnp. Don't know what else to do. I have the Linksys WRT54G here at home and at work. It still works at the office on port 6112 but not at home at all. Please help.
changed port to 56001 in router and utorrent, entered in my ip and enabled. put Utor1 for the program, but router still isn't giving me a great connection(around 60kbs). but if i don't use the router, then i can get the green triangle and get dl's up to 300kbs. don't know what i am doing wrong. but like i said, at one time it worked about 5 days but can't seem to get it to work now. 60kbs is not great but 300kbs is awesome.
What torrent client are you using ?, if it's Bit Torrent then a clue appears down at the bottom right of the client window, it should say "online, ports open". In which case all is well as far as port forwarding setup goes. If it says "online, maybe firewalled" then something's amiss in the port forwarding setup. I have this same router and i only use the common torrent ports of 6881 thru 6889, set to 'both' (ie TCP and UDP) and i always get "online, ports open" and i get full use of my broadband line. ps every once in a while after a reboot i end up with a new ip address from the Linksys, in which case you just update the port forwarding screen with the new ip address.. I can't help if you use another torrent client as i've only ever used bit torrent
I am using Utorrent. Right now I am connected directly to my modem and getting a dl of 400kbs. so im sure it has something to do with my router, like its blocking utorrent. i have also did ipconfig and entered that ip on the gaming page of my router. which port would you recommend i use?
Finally, after extensive searching, I managed to get the green triangle. Here is what I had to do. Windows Vista. Open Control Panel, and switch to classic view Go to Administrative Tools Open Windows Fire Wall with Advanced Security From the left, select Inbound Rules A list of programs on the right side, scroll down and locate Utorrent Double click on it (or right click and choose properties) Select Protocols and Ports tab In both Local Port and Remote Port select Specific Ports from the list and write your listen port (the one configured in Utorrent) in the space below. Now select the Advanced tab In the upper part (Profiles) select These profiles and put a check mark next to Public Put a check mark in Allow edge traversal Click Ok Then I went back into my router configeration to application and gameing and entered Utor1 6881 to 6881 both and my ip address, enable. All set. Thanks for your inputs, hope this helps someone else.
Yet another reason I am staying FAR away from Vista :/ Seems you need to have an engineering degree to perform routine tasks on the OS! edit That is 100% false! You can use any port that is not being used by another process. It is recommended to always use a port over 10,000 though.
Indeed. my firm are making a few (unwanted) noises re going to Vista at some point. Luckily for us they never buy decent enough PC's for us geeks so it'll be a long time before (if at all hehe) we have PC's that are up to the job, so we get to escape Vista for some time to come. (our pc's are not even up to the job of running Outlook 2003, yesterday we had to beg for doubling our RAM from 512mb to 1GB, they weren't overly pleased about doing that, people have being begging for RAM for over a year!). What finally got us the upgrade was 2 of us geeks saying in (in a meeting) that we only use our (less powerful) Linux machines for all tasks as our Windows XP PC's (they're P4's)are too slow for much of anything, that soon got some attention Even bagged a RAM upgrade for one of my linux machines; i'd always stuck to the common torrent ports of 6881 thru 6889 and it works well. over the last couple days i've been googling to see what i could do to use a 2nd torrent pc, then found out you can do it as long as you have a 2nd setting defined in the port forwarding tab of the router and that you could use some high numbers. i've had limited success so far, could just be down to the fact that my b/band connection is too slow to sustain more than a few downloads. Anyway, The only thing i've read about the standard torrent posts is not to use them as most ISP's gun for torrent traffic, however i'm not yet convinced that using very high port numbers instead of the standard port numbers buys much benefit. I need to research this more.. For now i've disabled the 2nd pc for torrenting, it just wasn't doing much (it does however say "online ports open" in the torrent client so i can see that you can actually have two or more PC's for torrenting, which i didn't realise until a couple days ago..)
Sounds like a typical business scenario, cut costs at all corners (ironically it seems to be in the most important areas i.e technology) and then in the future question why things went wrong. I am surprised you boss is that cheap though Creaky, I mean, come on on....I just got 2 gigs of Corsair for $90!! Im sure he(she) wont be breaking the bank, especially in the name of increased proficiency! As far as the common ports go, more and more ISP's are beginning to throttle the common torrent ports. I have a friend that has Comcast as an ISP and he cant even begin a torrent using the default range. If your ISP is allowing those ports, all the better. When I get my rare torrenting on now and days I make sure to switch up the port, usually stay between the 35k to 60k range. And yeah, it has to do a lot with your bandwidth. I have a 15 mb down/2 mb up connection but often have problems with speed when attempting to download multiple torrents. You can always use the lvlord patch and increase the number of half open connections, it isn't guaranteed but it cant hurt, plus you can reverse the changes as easily as you did making the initial change.
Well this morning I am back in the same boat again. Not getting that green connection, yellow again. Had to reboot so doulble checked ip. Nothing has changed, so guess I will try upping my port. This is really crazy. I have RoadRunner and am using a Gateway Intel(R)Core(TM)2 CPU 1.60GHz 2038 MB ram 140Gb HD, but yes, its Vista. I'm thinking about maybe getting a i different brand of wireless router since it seems to be whats causing this.
well i have version 5 of this router, normally v5 gets appalling reviews from people, it's an unstable router for torrents, though the latest firmware 1.01.0 addresses this.., i've been using this router for a long time without issue. edit- i'm now using a 2nd pc thru the router for torrenting successfully. I've set the 2nd one to port forward range 16881 thru 16889 ie i just added a 1 at the front of the standard port range.. i very much doubt it's the router at fault, unless of course your have older firmware than mine, in which case you need the latest firmware ASAP
jasstac - any idea what version WRT54G you have (can't tell if you have 2 of them or use one between home and work). edit- adding a load of info here re the WRT54G from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/561513/3404895 --> just passing thru and saw the WRT54G mentioned; version 5 of this router is indeed apparently atrocious, though as far as i know it's only so bad where torrenting is concerned. Found this out after i'd bought my version 5 though found out by surfing for info after buying and using it for ages (i'd very rarely had problems with the router, was just looking for any newer firmware); I must add that i installed the latest firmware quite early on (firmware 1.01.0) and the rare need for reboots became much more rare. Every few months (quite some months) the 10 or so wireless PC's in the house would start playing silly buggers and it would be a case of power cycle the router, then it will be fine for many more months. What fixed my (rare) problems was this - "Firmware 1.01.0 - Resolves Multi-session issue" edit- Doh!, there's 3 firmware updates been released since i last checked, must try the latest one when i'm home next. Firmware 1.01.1, then 1.02.0 (one important fix is "Improves compatibility with BitTorrent."), and then 1.02.2 I'm only mentioning all this in case anyone that already owns a version 5 router, searches and ends up in this thread, in which case the latest firmware should help. I'm not however going as far as recommending people actually buy a version 5 of this router, due to the amount of negative info/experiences out there on the net. I'm probably just lucky that mine works so well That's also good info there from PeaInAPod re the DD-WRT firmware, but of course the version 5 WRT54G can't be flashed like that. ie. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G#WRT54G - "Broadcom BCM5352EKPB Chipset - Switched to VxWorks OS and reduced Flash Memory and RAM; not compatible with most 3rd party firmware." Just awaiting a reply on someone else's WRT54G here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/560287/3398207 not sure if it's a Version 5 though
Well I am using WRT54G V6 with firmware 1.02.2 and I'll have to check the one at works' version. The thing that I can seem to understand, is that I keep redoing the some things I did the first time it worked, but nothing seems to be fixing it.
Hey man. I had the same problem as you for a long time, and it finally worked tonight. However, I'm not sure if this will help you, because you said you played with the upnp. I use utorrent. So if you are forwarding ports, you have to make sure you uncheck Randomize ports in the settings (as I am probably sure you did) and uncheck use upnp. Now I think you already forwarded all your ports and such, so the correct port number is already in the utorrent settings. What I changed to make it work was something that should not affect it, but I disabled upnp in my linksys router. I read that it caused problems when connecting to some xbox 360... and it worked!! My ports are finally being forwarded. I hope this helps. I'll be back to see later.
i currently own a linksys wired router and im planning to buy the linksys WRTP54G VOIP wireless router because i have Vonage. i am also interested in buying an xbox 360 and the xbox wireless network adapter for it. is it possible to play on xbox live wirelessly using the linksys WRTP54G VOIP wireless router? If not please tell me what i should get so i can keep my vonage connection and still play wirelessly on the xbox 360?
