I have an AVI file with some sound in the beginning during an intro, for some reason, then no sound after that.

Ran it through GSpot and it said for Audio that it's PCM Audio...For video MP42 with no codec installed. I have both DivX and AC3 installed don my computer

Yes...Is there a codec I need to install to get sound? Right now, I have none except after the intro. All of my other AVI's work fine except this one.

AVI files can be damaged, it happens from time to time.
Understand that, and learn a few basic techniques.
    For example, the audio stream
is really a file within the file. It can be stripped out and looked
at. If it's mp3, very simple, if it's ac-3, you can try ac3fix,
    etc,etc.

A few approaches. Dumux the audio and look at it in
an audio editor. You'll easily be able to see how much
audio you have. Perhaps the audio track is damaged, and
    is shorter than the video.
Perhaps it's a levels problem - Audio too quite?

If you can hear audio at the beginning but then it disappears,
not really a codec issue, as far as I can see.

You can demux the audio by using virtualdubmod/streams/demux.
