    Hello,
I have a pack of Memorex 16X DVD+R, but my burner can only burn DVDs at 8X. Can I burn the 16X media at a speed of 8X? I e-mailed Memorex about this and they insisted that the DVD+Rs would not work in my burner. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks a lot :)

    Hi,

You cannot burn media faster than your burner. You will be able to burn at 8x as that is what your burner is manufactured to do and will not adjust for higher speed media. Now memorex is not the greatest media in the world (dreaded cmc crap) but check this media forum http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47 to see how memorex media fares against other brands of blank media. Also I recommend if you are looking to burn movies keep your speed at 4x or 8x. See the link in my signature regarding media as well. Good luck and post back if you needed further assistance.

That's what I'm doing w/ this Verb. 16x media. Although my burner can write @ 16x, I always burn @ 8x because I've never had a bad disc w/ that burn speed on my computer. Yesterday I just did Almost Famous, The Hot Chick, and Psycho. They all turned out perfect. The only media I use is MIJ Sonys and Verbatim Adv. Azo 16x certified. (both are DVD+r)

So, I CAN burn a 16X DVD+R with by my 8X (maximum) burner, as long as I burn at 8X? This must be a really stupid question because I googled like mad and could not find an answer. Thanks to both of you for your help :)

Basically if your burner can only burn at 8X, no matter what discs you use, eg 16X it will only burn at 8X maximum. Rather simple really.
In relation to your Memorex discs, no matter what speed you burn at, you'll be back here with some of kind of problem and chances are that it will relate to your poor choice of media.

What does memosux know? Some of their blank media won't work in a lot of dvd drives! Namely Cmags!!!!! LOL

You may be ok. You've got the possibility of memosux cmag 16x media. You've also got the firmware factor. The firmware may not recognize that media code on those memosux discs. You'll know this when your burner asks you for a blank/you insert that memosux/and it spits it out saying incompatable error or no disc was inserted. It'll usually be during the lead-in phase of burning.

    What's your burner's brand name and model#?

There is a possibility of using a hacked firmware to get your burner to burn at 16x. Very risky and could ruin your drive.

I actually have no intention of trying to burn at 16X speed...I just wasn't sure if the 16X would burn at all in my 8X burner. Does 16X mean it will burn at all lower speeds as well (2X, 4X, 8X, etc) or ONLY 16X? That was my question to Memorex and I received a really abrupt and ambiguous answer, LOL. I read some posts about the Memorex thing and checked DVD identifier, and it looks like my discs are okay (RICOH). Thanks again.

Run them through dvdidentifier. It'll look like this-look for recording speeds at bottom:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MCC-004-000]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
    Manufacturer ID : [MCC]
    Media Type ID : [004]
    Product Revision : [Not Specified]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW: Since those are ricohs and if you like them, they have the same MID code that is on the Office Depot +16x. Those OD brand discs are a heck of a lot cheaper than the memosux. Sometimes 20 cents each in a buy1/get 1 or 2 free deal.
