Hi rdrake Please download Autoruns from Sysinternals. Unzip the file, and run autoruns.exe. Click on File, Find, and type in LogonUI.exe. Tell me the location of the file when Autoruns finds it. (eg: C:\Windows\system32\logonui.exe) Best Regards
Thank you SO much for replying. I ran autoruns and searched for "LogonUI.exe" and it didn't find it. I got the message, "Cannot find string "LogonUI.exe". Since my last post I've realized that this goes beyond just the "LogonUI" error message. I get the same type of error message for just about every program that runs on startup with a recurring message. "The procedure entry point ASN1BEREncOpoi could not be located in the dynamic link library MSASN1.dll". I have also noticed that I cannot play any of my music or videos. Any more suggestions you have would be GREATLY appreciated. radrake
I hope cdavfrew forgives me but that file cannot be located with autoruns. It’s in an EX_ file that has to be expanded.. I see where Vista is having the same trouble with these system files as XP was.. This works with XP and I see no reason it will not with Vista. Set a restore point before performing the Fix. That way, if it don’t work, you can always step back.. Goto -> Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> view Check -> Show hidden files and folders Un-Check -> Hide file extensions for known file types Un-Check -> Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Navigate to C:\WINDOWS Locate the folder C:\WINDOWS\i386 Open this folder and locate the file logonui.EX_ COPY (not cut) this file into the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder Open the Command Prompt START -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt Type the following text EXACTLY (including the spaces etc.): (There is a space between EX_ and c:\) EXPAND c:\windows\system32\logonui.EX_ c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe Press <ENTER> Close the Command Prompt and Restart/Shut Down your system. Next time you start up the logonui problem should be fixed and you can work on the other problems. 2OG
Thank you 2OG for replying... I did everything you said, and after typing everything into the command prompt and hitting enter, I got the following message: "Expanding File c:\windows\system32\logonui.ex_ Incomplete, Error Code=0x80070005 Error Description: Access is denied." Any further suggestions would be great. Thanks again.
Five minutes with Google revealed that many Vista users have experienced a similar error. Close all windows and stop any running programs. Goto -> Start -> Run, and then type cmd At the command prompt, type chkdsk /X C: Chkdsk runs and automatically repairs the volume. If the following message appears, type Y. “Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?” The next time the computer is started, Chkdsk will automatically run. I know this is frustrating, but it may save you a re-format / re-install.. 2OG
Thanks for helping... I received the following message after typing "chkdsk /X C:": "Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode."
ok nevermind... i had to run cmd as administrator. nonetheless, i got it done. i had to type "y" and restart my computer. now what options do i have? thanks
I don’t have enough experience with Vista to remember all this junk about it protecting you from yourself…. ; ) Did you run as Admin when you tried to expand the logonui.ex_ ? Did chkdsk fix anything? Try to do the EXPAND logonui.ex_ again as Administrator and see if it works..
alright... Re-ran the EXPAND logonui.ex as admin and it began doing it but ultimately it gave me the same error, access denied. As for the chkdsk... tried it for a second time and it didn't seem to fix anything. And yes... this is very frustrating. I really appreciate your help though. rdrake
Do you have a recovery CD that came with your computer or a Vista disk??? Is there a recovery partition on your HDD, maybe D:\ ?? Try: Goto -> Start -> Run -> type in “sfc /scannow” without quotes, space between sfc and /scannow. You also may need admin priv. See if it can find the bad system files and maybe it will look on the C: drive for it. If it asks you to insert a CD, do it if you have one, otherwise we’ll have to go to another plan….
