I have used decrypter to burn my dvd's since I started and have never had a problem. Recently this error has been coming up when I first start the burning process. Power Calibration Error. My friend gave me the Nero 6 software and I installed it and got the same error. The dvd's I've been trying are old movies that there should not be any problems with, such as of mice and men and deep impact. I used shrink like I always do, but have never encountered this problem until the last two or three weeks. Please help.
A power calibration error can mean many things... 1. Improper power is getting to your burner, check the connections. 2. Cheap media, use quality media from Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Fuji, Sony, Maxell (made in Japan). 3. Last but not least, your burner is about to go to the burner graveyard.
I've had this problem too. It started suddenly. I've checked a few sites and done a few essays to solve the problem. I could write cds, cdrw, but no DVD-r. Finally, I've upgrades de ASPI drivers, I've changed the IMAPI device, first ON, then OFF. ANd then again, ON and OFF. Meanwhile, I've cleaned my MATSHITA's lens with alcohol... Miracle!!! It started to write DVDs again. Well, I've talked to the computer as well... nasty words! It seemed to be the key!!! Good Luck!
I'd suspect the alcohol cleaning doing the job more than installing ASPI. On rare occasions it may be needed, but to date I've not seen it be the solution to any problems. With XP and the SPTI interface, ASPI is unneeded and most apps that need ASPI, such as Nero, have their own driver(s) included.

i bought a HP Pavilion ze2000 as work only gives us crappy laptops for oncall, but luckily very rarely waste it i mean use on work stuff like most/all laptop optical drives the dvd burner is a bit wishy washy so very much doubt it'll survive too many uses
With laptops it may be better to use a quality external burner. Sort of hurts the portability a bit though. For a lot of backups, a desktop is preferable. Use RB in the batch mode and you can have your home desktop processing high quality backups while you are at work (or away for whatever purpose) and overnight when the PC is not usually in use. True encoders deliver better quality, especially with higher compression levels. Laptops are nice for portability, but I don't think I'd rationalize getting one for doing DVD backups. If you do go with a laptop, look at the new dual core systems. Good dual core processors are starting to make single core systems look like a low end P2 compared to a top end HT dual channel P4.
@brobear Would heat be a big factor to take into consideration with a dually for a laptop? I've not looked into them personally, but mine has an AMD Athlon64 3200+, which is supposed to run a little hot, but I've seen no ill effects. I've backed up around 150 titles on the laptop with no problems so far. I also wanted something I can take to the pool in the summer while sippin on coronas...LOL
