    first time posting.
I have a lite-on dual layer dvd burner that has been working fine until a days ago. It is now giving me a power calibration error but only when it is moving on to burn the second layer. I am using the same media as I was before, and even tried different media with no success.I have also tried different programs with no success. here is my error report. any help is much appreciated.

I don't see anything obviously wrong in the log based on a quick scan. Your burner firmware is up to date.

I'll just note that any DL media other than Verbatim +RDL can be difficult for some burners to handle. Ritek media, which is what you have is OK for some burners, but is problematic for others.

I don't think using Nero 6.6.0.17 to burn DL media is a very good idea. The best version of Nero 6 is 6.6.0.18 in my opinion. That said, ImgBurn is probably the best burning engine available and it's free.

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

    or

    Package 1: http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

    http://www.imgburn.com

There is a also a Roxio burning driver installed, CDRAL. I'd suggest removing it with the Roxio Zapper program.

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
    http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061

After removing the Roxio driver and updating to Nero 6.6.0.18, use the simulation mode and try burning again and see if the simulation encounters the same error. Or try using ImgBurn. I personally don't use Nero for burning DL media. I use either ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter.

I, too, am having a similar problem to the OP.

Suddenly I am getting the Power Calibration Error on media that had previously been OK.

It only happens on the second layer (single layer discs are fine).

I have the OEM version of the SONY AW-G170A. SONY sent me a firmware upgrade (AAWG170A_172.exe) which doesn't appear to work - it just hangs. I have also tried the latest (AWG170A_173.exe) with the same result.

Is this error really doen to the media?

I did have a problem previously after installing the full version of Photo DVD Maker. Unisntalling solved that problem. BUt I haven't installed any other DVD authoring software except SONY DVDA 4.5. But I have had DVDA2 installed for several years without issue.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    The error log is below.

    This applies to your problem.

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?d...rder=Name&hits=50&search=Search+or+List+Media

Also the rule is to burn at half the rated speed of the media.
    8x is too fast.

Last but not least your DMA is off.

    @Mav6215

    Recorder: <SONY DVD RW AW-G170A> Version: 1.71

Your burner's firmware is oudated, you should update to version 1.73, you can get it here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2370

    Also..

    CdRomPeripheral : SONY DVD RW AW-G170A 1.71 Pnp680 Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off

You need to enable DMA for your burner as well, 56delray provided a link on how to do that if needed. The two suggestions should do the trick, but if not....

-try and clean the burners lens, they have CDs that will do this for you.
-try another brand of Media like Verbatims.
-If all fails, it's possible that the problem lies with the drive, it might be going bad on you, in this case getting a new one will do.

    @john @delray

I think the member said he tried the firmware update and it stalled on him in the process. I'm guessing it was because the DMA transfer mode was off due to a comm error on the channel. Hopefully by getting that set back on, the member will also be able to update the firmware.

    Hi

Thanks for the replies, especially as you had to wade through all the Log file listings.

I checked the DMA in Hardware Devices and they all appeared to be ON.

So I uninstalled them and rebooted.

I downloaded the firmware upgrade but all I got was a window with some giberish and and OK button which I clicked. Another window appeared for less than a second then vanished. I still don't think the driver has been updated.

Also, after the previous attempts at updating the driver and rebooting the SONY GW170A went a little crazy with the draw opening/closing fully then opening a short amount and closing many times in quick succession. Any ideas what this is a symptom of?

I'll look into ImgBurn but can anyone tell me whether it can burn nrg files resulting from rendering a DDVD to file in Nero Vision 4?

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Yes, ImgBurn burns Nero nrg files. They are treated the same as an ISO image.

The tray opening and closing sometimes happens with firmware updates. I'm guessing that maybe the firmware update you had was in Japanese or some other script language. Updates don't take a very long time. All of your devices were showing up in DMA mode with the exception of your burner which is why the other members pointed that out. Sometimes some controllers don't report correctly with Nero and that could be the case here. Do you have another log, post update, that you could post?

    Hi

Just burnt to a Traxdata +R DL disc without problems (Played back in Nero Showtime OK). Nero Express indicated an 8x speed but I changed this to 2.4x.

I then attempted to burn with the previous media type (DataWrite +R DL) and the problem came back. I had set to 2.4x.

Looking at the new Log file it appears DMA is still 'Off' - yet this didn't affect the Traxdata disc.

Also, the firmware is still showing as 1.71 - agin, didn't seem to bother the Traxdata disc.

As I have said before, I have DL burned OK to the Datawrite discs before so do not understand why the sudden change.

    Thanks again for all advice.

Here's a different link to the 1.73 firmware. Maybe it'll be in English.

    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/fwinfo/en/7170a/173

I don't have an answer why the Verbs won't burn. Most have the opposite problem, i.e., they can't burn TraxData, Ricoh, and Ridata. Could just be a bad batch I guess.

OK that's Ricoh media that you were trying to burn and not Verbatim. Ricoh and Ridata can be problematic for some burners. Usually you need up to date firmware to assure success. However, I have an older NEC that burns everything so I usually rely on it and I haven't updated its firmware for at least a year.

i too am getting this on the second layer, using cheap dvd's, but they worked fine before.. i have verbatiums on the way, but why would it stop working all of the sudden? i tried to update my firmware with that like, first of all it looked like i was already up-to-date, but i went ahead anyway, and i got an error with windows wanting for me to search for a solution to the problem the program was having. now it says its a NEC drive when i open up the flashing utility but it is a Mad Dog Burner. I would like to send my log file, could someone help me do this?

Mad Dog sometimes rebranded NEC burners. Nero logs are in the following locations.

Nero 6: Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory
    Nero 7: Program Files -> Nero -> Nero7 -> Core -> NeroHistory

Or see this more detailed description from locoeng:

If you're using Nero 7 and your version is up to date(7.10.1.2), the burn logs location is changed. You would find them here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ahead

It was a hiden folder, so you would need to enable "Show hidden folders/files" in Folders->View.
