    I just started burning DVD's and and I know that sometimes you can have issues with different media brands causing power calibration errors during a burn. I'm using Fujifilm DVD+R and figured this is a good brand of DVDs and my burner is a newer Sony DVD/RW/DW U10a but I have been unable to burn a dvd using several different programs. What else can be causing this problem? I don't have much experience with firmware, could it help?

    Hi Judan911
    Welcome at aD
    Check the model # on the Sony - the DWU10A last had a firmware update in 4/2003.

    One thing the firmware does is help the drive with read & write strategies of media - esp the the newer media. So if it's not up to date may be the reason for the power calibration error.

    Fuji can be good - just depends on who made them and compatibility.
    What the rated speed on the media?
    What speed are you burning at?

    The DVD's are rated for up to 16x and my burner is burning DVDs at 2.4x. If I download firmware, what should I download and how exactly is it installed? Thx

    Ok - just need you to check the model # of the drive and we can go from there.
    The one you listed is several years old not a newer Sony.
    What programs have you tried to burn with?

    I've used everthing from DVD Shrink to Nero, Cucosoft, Roxio. None could burn. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware or Media issue. I'll get back to you tomorrow about the Model #, it's getting late here. Thanks again for all your help.

    No problem :)
    You can check the make, model and current firmware version in Nero.
    Just go to Nero ToolKit>Info Tool. Have the Sony picked (model listed there) then the drive tab. There's a field for firmware version.

    2.4x is the max speed on +R's if your drive is a U10A.
    But let's make sure that's the right model #.

    hi, Judan911
    Only good if they are Made in Japan, If they are not i would try returning them for better media like Verbatims, which go on sale at least once a month if not more. just my thought

    Hello Binkie, have not been able to get a 80 pin IDE cable yet to see if it helps my ripping time, just have been too busy, will post the results if i ever get around to getting the cable, LOL

    hello judan911,

    Here is a link to update ur firmware[bold](newest one is 1.1e,)[/bold]( u are using 1.1d right now) , this might help with the burning speeds, as it only shows 2, 2.4 right now.

    edit-
    Nero and Roxio might have conflicts, u can also try using ImgBurn to burn movies, very good burning program
    heres a link for it http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

    @Judan911
    Yep just the info we needed.

    Try the firmware update that 300bowler links too. May help but the last support on this drive was 4/2003 so 16x media will probably give it problems.
    2.4x is the max this drive will burn +R - 4x for -R media so may be time to get a new drive.
    Your power calibration is probably a combo like you said - the media and drive. If you can find 4x or even 8x media try that. Then again good drives are pretty cheap now a days - probably your best bet.

    @Judan911
    This one does look a little funky. Save it to your desktop - looks like the default path.
    Make sure no blanks in the drive and no programs running. Keep the power on.
    Once saved to the desktop should be a exe file - doubble click - may have to pick the drive then something like ok. Takes under a minute to update/flash. Should receive something like done, okay and reboot.
    Try it - see how that goes.
    300bowler is right - cheap now - heck the last one I bought a LiteOn was cheaper than filling up my gas tank

    @300bowler
    The drive was made Vendor Specific : Feb07 ,2003 then the last firmware was 2 months later - so maybe time :)

    Hmmm did it give you a choice to pick from - or just right off got that message?
    The drive is an oem Sony DRU500A so you could try the latest for that drive (2.1a)- may not work either - just a little riskier. Couldn't find right off a patched firmware that might take.
    But these are from 2004 so you might still have a problem w/ 16x media.

    Got that msg right off the bat. It didn't have an option to choose drives.

    Ok - riskier -you can try the one for DRU500 but may get the same thing or a kill the drive (slim) but kinda still leaves you in the same boat - older firmware and newer media don't mix very well.

    Depending on where you located we can probably give you recommends for an online site that has good prices on drives if you like.
