Kinda hard to identify a problem with such little information.

Did this happen when you first tried turning it off? What have you installed since you bought it?

There are ways of forcing XP to shutdown by adjusting the "WaitToKillTimeout" option in the registry, but it'd be better if we knew a little more about what's going on.

I cant recall to clearly but i think it may have started when i first bought it in June of 2005. I have installed office xp, mcafee internet security and thats about it. MY laptop was still underwarranty so i asked one of the people and he gave me a site to download a driver and did not specify which one. It was the main compaq site for drivers. And my warranty expired the next day so i dunno what to do.
