Hey guys, just a question.... I begun to use Memorex's DVD sticky labels for my collection but have noticed that on most of the discs I stuck them on, those discs began skipping and some stopped playing completely! I understand that a lot of guys have suggested staying away from them (sorry, read those threads after I started having the problem) but mostly said it was because of peeling from the label. Is what I am experiencing a common issue with these labels or do you think its coincidental and my DVD player is on the way out? Thanks for the help!
I use to use labels myself, but no more, there are a lot of good people here that know what thry are doing and has given good help. I haven't had any problem with the one's I have labels on yet but now I buy the printable disk and use my inkjet printer to print the label on, and besides it really looks better to. The people here have helped me out enough and I trust what they say. Rich
Labels have been known to cause problems,also if your sticking those memorex labels on memorex dvdr's then that could be your problem too. Always use good media(Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are my choices),and either printable media, or use a nonsolvent based marker..such as a Sharpie.
I always use Ritek or Verbatim DVD+R's. How can I print directly to the disc (printable inkjet) with an ordinary inkjet? I have the Canon MP780.
To be able to print directly onto Ink Jet printable discs you have to have a printer with that feature. From what I have gleaned from others this is NOT available to Canon in US. I believe most use an Epson. I live in OZ and I have a Canon iP4000.........great results. Excellent covers from http://www.cdcovers.cc
You can print direct to cd with this printer if you care to modify it. I have converted the IP3000 and IP5000 and made a tray from a skinny DVD case (no need for templates or cardboard). @ attar, that sounds mighty daring of you to do. Congrats if it works well. But as for the question at hand, I have had problems with Sticky labels as well, One theory is that the wieght of the label, although not much, can throw the balance off of the disc. And that is what is causing the "Skipping and Stopping". I did this as a test. I was watching "The Day After Tommorrow" with the Sticky Label on it, and of course it started skipping like crazy, but it was a great movie, so I tried to continue watching it, until it just stopped! So I heard that if you soak the disc in warm soapy water the label should peel off, and you would no longer have these issues. Well, The label seems to not want to come off very easily, but by soaking it over and over again, and a little Rubbing Alcohol for the remaining glue. I put the disc back it, and watched the complete movie with not one skip! So I no longer use the Sticky Label, I use LightScribe Disc's, and have had no issues, and would highly recommend them. A little pricy for the LightScribe Disc's, but you no longer have to buy Labels or Ink. Best of luck, JBurden
The other suggested reason labels cause playback problems is that the label absorbs heat and causes the dvd to warp. In either case, most times labels cause more trouble than they are worth. The Sharpie or printable media is the safe way to go, or lightscribe. Jerry
@JBurden Bows modestly;comparing the results between the $40 Canon, machined plastic, eBay tray and the twenty cent, hand crafted, plastic dollar store tray, indicates that there is no discernable difference. and the amount of daring involved approximates to refilling your own ink-tanks (and you don't have to get naked to do it !)
