Cant give an answer to your question, but I came across similar problems many time with almost all all-in-one video to dvd converters, where either the size would be too big or too small of the output or the quality would be terrible.

Now, im struggling with TMPG software. I have been looking for a good, quality conserving app for so long and had almost no luck.

PS. But if you want quality over speed for your DVD, Id still recommend TMPGenc xpress, even though it had not worked for me.

winavi converter isnt much quality wise, u could try out avi2dvd which allows you to add subtitles and you could use the free encoder HC which would produce better quality than winavi converter.

I use TMPGe xpress and I only have problems with certain movies going from 1 hour 30 mins to being 5 hours of nothing at the end (tmpg adding this for unknown reason) then taking 36+ hours to convert the long 5 hours. Other then the select few, I have had no problems with tmpeg xpress, and it has worked great.
