Problem burning DVDs - the files get burned, but the files seem to get deleted afterwards.

    Okay, I need to burn a video I have onto a blank DVD. I've tried several programs to burn the DVD, but none have worked. I tried using Nero Burning ROM, for example, but it doesn't seem to work. Basically, the DVD will either burn or just won't burn at all. The video is ~4.2GB large, and the disc is ~4.7GB large, so I don't think it's a size issue. Now, in order for the disc to burn, I need to write it at 1x. Anything higher than that seems to produce an error as soon as the file starts getting burnt. Some errors I get include: "Power Calibration Area Error", and "Invalid Address For Write".

    HOWEVER, if I do manage to burn the disc at 1x, the disc will usually burn. After I burn the disc, I look at the disk in "My Computer", and it'll show me the name of the video on the DVD - when I right click it and see the options, it'll actually say it's ~4.2GB full, which meant the burn was successful. However, as soon as I remove the disk, and put it back into the drive, the files seem to get wiped out. The name of the disk will change from the proper name of the video to the generic, "DVD-Drive", and when I right click that, it'll say "0GB full, 0GB empty", implying the disk was somehow corrupted. However, it only happens as soon as I take the disk out of my computer - it'll be perfectly fine while it's in my computer, it seems.

    Thinking it was a problem with my burner, I took the video to my father's laptop, and tried burning the file from there. The results were even worse. I tried burning it at 1x, but as soon as I attempted burning the disk, I got a power calibration error, and had to cancel the operation.

    For reference, my DVD burner is "PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D". The firmware's been updated to its latest version, 1.80. The two brands of DVD I tried to use were "Ritek F1" and "RITEKG05". I did some research, and heard they weren't exactly the "best brand", however, I just need to burn this video for a presentation - not for storage purposes, so I just need the video to work once. I also did some research on the power calibration issue, and tried "setting the option for my DVD burner" to "disabled" (forgot what the setting was called), but it basically didn't work, and I still got the errors.

    Anyways, if anyone could help me, I would really appreciate it. I find it really weird that my burner is able to burn the files, but then the files get deleted, as well as the power calibration error. I tried searching it on the forum, but I was still unable to fix my problem. If anyone is able to suggest any solutions to the problem I'm having, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

    Your burner is too old to properly work with today's media.

    wow.. a pioneer 106 still working .. that's awesome.. haven't seen one actually try to burn in about 4 years.

    You could try flashing it to AO4 firmware.. that seems to handle everything but 16x +r's

    The ritek G05 disks should be fine.. the pioneer 106 and G05 was the stock combination for xbox copies back in the day.. I have close on 1000 made that way and they are still perfect... unlike my poor old 106 which hit the scrapheap 4 years ago with disk calibration errors and no reading capabilities.

    1x is too slow anyway.. 4x is a nice speed for the 106.. is DMA on, and if it reads disks try giving the laser a good clean, but be prepared to go out and invest in a new burner.

    Wow, well that's interesting. I knew my computer was old (the last firmware update was in 2003), but I didn't think it would be that bad. I suppose you are right - DVDs are quite a new media. Actually - I managed to burn videos fine with my old burner on my old computer (which was, ironically, newer than my "new" computer). Personally, most of the stuff I do on my computer is just schoolwork - no games or anything - so I never really wanted a supercomputer - but I do suppose that technology gets outdated fast for the computer within just a few years. From both of your reactions, I guess I'd better burn my disc on another computer.

    What really bothered me, though, was that it would still sometimes burn with 1x, but yeah, half of the time I guess it would just not burn at all. Same with my father's "new" laptop as well. I guess I'll just have to try burning the files on my sister's laptop later, then. She has a new computer, so I guess that's my best chance for getting something burnt.

    Hmm, flashing it? Well, I never liked the word "flash" with computers, and I always hear bad things about it. Flashing a computer is like performing open heart surgery. I definitely don't think I'm experienced/have enough knowledge to risk flashing my computer, though I do suppose the results could be good. I'm going to try burning the video on my sister's laptop using Nero. I'll be sure to post the results here. Thank you for the assistance, Dialysis1 and Varnull, I really appreciate it.

    Hmm, something weird kind of happened.

    Well, I tested out burning the files on my dad's old laptop - I got nearly the same error (power calibration, etc) and it didn't burn. I tried it on my sister's laptop, which was very new, and it seemed that the burning process worked. After burning the files, I could remove the DVD, and put it back into her laptop, and it would work, which meant that the files were actually burnt. HOWEVER, as soon as I put the DVD into my own computer - the disc doesn't read at all, and my computer just gives me the generic "DVD drive". However, my computer can read the other DVDs (the ones I don't burn) just fine. Why can't my computer read the DVD that was burnt on my sister's laptop? Tell me if you need another log - I forgot to transfer the log to my computer and she currently has her laptop with her.

    Most likely your drive is not compatable with those discs.

    @TC,

    Everyone's analysis is sound and based in fact. Yours is based in "wishcraft".

    Just suck it up and get a new drive already.
