i'm new at this thing and i've tried to search for the answer to my question, but i haven't my exact problem. I've burned about 20 dvds with my I/O magic 8x dvdrw. I used dvd x copy xpress. I recently got errors when I burned or freeze ups. I've tried dvd decrypter, and dvd lab to burn. Dvd decrypter (version 3.1.9.0) stops and freezes at 35% everytime. I called I/O magic and they sent me aspi drivers, but that did nada. Dvd lab stopped at about the same percentage finished. I'm pretty sure it's a software problem, because all of the dvds that didn't finish are partly burned. I'm about to give up and face my wife ready to tell me "I told you it wouldn't work." Don't let me down.

    Don't face the wife yet!

I would venture to say that the problem is hardware/system/setting related since the problem occurs with several programs.

A few questions if you will,

Do you have DMA set for your burner? This will explain:

    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

Is the burner set to master on the IDE cable and is the jumper on the back of the drive set to master as well?

What ASPI version do you have installed? This utility will tell you:

    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/su...oduct/EZ-SCSI_5.0&filekey=aspichk.exe&sess=no

Have you updated to the latest firmware version for your drive?

Give us an answer for each question and we'll see if we can't get you burning away :)

Are you getting an error message? What kind of media are you using? Did you try a slower burn speed? You see it as a software problem but you are using different programs to burn with and getting failures in the middle of the burn with both. This is usually a media problem.

Thats quite a leap, Xcopy express to DVD Lab! Do you know that if you just want to do simple backups you can use DVD Shrink with Decrypter? If you are using "Lab" then this will be a piece of cake.

I seem to have answered a few posts concerning failed burns involving that burner. Not a good thing.

    So:
Get some DVD-R/W media so you can copy over mistakes.
Try some Ritek G-04 or Verbatim.
    Slower burn speed.
Post your error messages if any.

    Cheers,
    Frank

You guys seriously kick butt. Man, I was afraid I was going to have to throw the whole thing away. I downloaded the aspi checker thingy and it said something was wrong with it, so I downloaded straight from the site. Now I just need to put aspi on there correctly (one giant leap). I also checked the DMA setting and it is set on DMA...is that good or bad? My cd rw is my primary slave, while my Dvd is the secondary slave....I think. I'm pretty much flying by the seat of my pants and yes I'm a friggin' genius.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll try the aspi thing again and yes I'll look into DVD rw from now on.....I have a large collection of coasters if anyone wants one.

Ok....Aspi doesn't like me. I ran the check and at the bottom there is an area that is not highlighed. It says "Aspi is installed properly and is fully operational", so I'm assuming I didn't install it properly. I looked in my adaptec folder. I double clicked the MS-dos Install batch file, then I double clicked the apsiinst application file. It said it was updated and I rebooted. Then I did the Adaptec check again and the little area that says it's properly installed is still not highlighted. So basically I can't install the Aspi file correctly. My techno-wizardry is not up to par, I guess. Anyone help with that? I have windows xp pro.

yourproblem.dvd decrypter can be used region free software
    1. dvd decrypter must run with region free atthe sametime.
so the whole movie could come out only in file mode
    2. use dvd2one to shrink movie, also use dvd shrink

Congrats to Rizzle on the fine ASPI install :)

Even though it isn't highlighted, if it says ASPI is installed and working properly you've done it right.

DMA is what you want, though if possible it's ideal to have your DVD burner set to master on either IDE.

Did you check on updating the firmware for your drive? The newer firmwares will often improve media compatibility and sometimes write strategy which could be a good thing in your case. DVD Info Pro is a cool, free little utility to have and will tell you the firmware version of your drive:

    http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

    Hee hee! I'm getting faster aren't I? ;)

Not true. ISOs work very well if one is so inclined :)

Well, at least you think I did something right because I'm not convinced. I downloaded dvdinfopro and on the system customization screen I tried to choose ASPI on the interface section and it said it failed and restarted on an old setting. I looked at the firmware version and it said 0054. I'm not sure what that means, I guess I'll check the glossary.

By the way I really appreciate the help. I must beat this thing. I've got all summer. I'm a teacher so I don't have to work.

When I got over the excitement of having my DVD burner back....I realized "Is this going to happen again?" Is there any preventative maintenance that I could do to keep my DVD burner and it's programs working well for a long time?
